Have any of those diagnosed with CD or gluten sensitivity been overweight? I am about 80 pounds overweight, so of course I've had difficulty convincing anyone that I could possibly be CD. If you were overweight did you lose weight when going gluten-free?

Hi Susan,

Welcome! I've seen your posts recently, but have had a chance to post to you.

Yes I was overweight...262 at my heaviest. I'm 6'5". During the 1.5 years that I was sick I dropped about 50-60 lbs. 15-20 of that in a matter of a couple of months.

My lowest weight was 207/210. Currently I'm at 216. I've gained back a few pounds since I my wife is baking lots of GF goodies for me Smile I've been GF for 2 years now.

I have a friend that is a silent celiac...he is overweight now. He was vastly overweight a number of years ago.

Unfortunately being underweight is one of the "classic" symptoms that people get stuck on....just like the "Big D"...some have constipation! We need to get docs & others to think outside the box when it comes to CD because it can manifest itself so differently. That is inpart why it's so difficult to diagnose.

I was overweight until, roughly, one year ago. I am 19, 6'3" -- and at my heaviest, I was 250lbs. I am now down to 173lbs. I lost those nearly 80lbs. in a matter of 4-6 months, with minimal exercise. Just this past week, when I was tested and before I knew my diagnosis, I had lost 5lbs. I was thought of as having an eating disorder, but when you have Big Big Big Big Big Big D's, roughly, 20 times a day -- it's hard to keep the weight on.

This may sound sick, but diets and all that did not work for me, being sick has. I suffered from severe kidney and bladder infections for two years, which started my weightloss. But once my Big D's kicked in, I was down 5-10lbs. a week.

My doctor is still concerened about the weight I am losing. He called yesterday and told me that if I don't feel any better, or my symptoms do not let up at all, I will have to go under more testing for outher diseases, mainly cancer he said.

I am glad that I lost the weight and am fit .. but I think I would've rather gone through it another way.

Jeannine,
I am an advocate for exercise and eating healthy. Ever since I have trimmed down, my energy and body have changed. I can't believe the person I used to be, only one year ago.

Eating fruits and veggies are key. Exercise everyday for at least half an hour. If you have patience, the weight will come off. Slowly but surely, it does.

Thanks for the words, Jeannine.

Rolling Eyes I have been fighting a weight problem for many years. My weight gain was primarly because I am an emotional overeater. Therefore, it is really hard to say if you start your GF diet that the weight will magically disappear! I had to give up dairy products for a year after being diagnosed. I was so depressed, I swear I lived on potato chips and diet soda. Anyways, good luck to you!!!

Hi Everyone, I have been overweight all my life and, I guess, an emotional eater. I do not eat because I am hungry. I probably eat for a variety of reasons. When I was diagnosed about 2 years ago, I was very upset. SO, because I could not eat what I wanted, I overate any and all GF products. I don't know who I was kidding but I am trying to be more active and eat a more healthy diet. Thanks for listening, Tobi
