Hi, hope someone can offer me some advise. I have recently been diagnosed with suspected gluten allergy following 2 years of tests. My main symptons are nausea and stomach cramps. For the last 2 weeks I have cut out Gluten from my diet and have been feeling much better, until today. The stomach cramps and nausea are back and the only thing i have eaten or drunk in the last 24 hours is gluten free bread, cheese, Gluten Free Pasta, Bacon, Peppers, coca cola, mars chocolate. Any ideas anyone??

Thanks

Bacon

Mars

Just my thoughts - bacon has gotten me before...and I dunno if Mars is GF (anyone?).

Then there is always a contaminated cutting board for the bread or cheese.

i would definitly check the bacon to make sure it is gluten free. i had some problems with bacon and i switched to walmarts fmv brand gluten free bacon and now can eat it as much as i want. also cheese can have gluten in it to so i play it safe and buy only ones that specify gluten free. as time goes on i am branching out to things that dont say gluten free by calling the manufacturers or checking their websites. but i dont branch too far as i am pretty new to this too:)

also did you get a new toaster? as the old toaster will have crumbs in it that can get on your gluten free bread. also they say to buy new pots and pans if you are using teflon because gluten stays in the teflon. i replaced all my pans which are nonteflon. this helped me out alot. just a few suggestions, hope it helps Very Happy

Hi Wedge,

Welcome to the board!

Sorry to hear you had a set back. That'll happen just starting out. What kind of Mars chocolate did you have? The regular Milky Way bar is NOT GF, but a Midnight MW bar IS GF. If I remember correctly the Mars Corp has good labeling practices - they won't hide gluten. Very Happy So, read you product labels again to see.

Gluten is hidden everywhere! In places where you'd least expect it...like Twizzlers!! [you "old timers" could see that coming from a mile away couldn't ya? heheheee].

It could also be other food issues. It's not uncommon to have several that cause problems Sad

You might have a look at Our Thread on GF Diet Boot Camp. It covers lots of stuff in the GF diet.

I throw up or have the big D if I drink sodas. Violently.

I've noticed this as well. It's not violently bad, but it does remind me of my pre-GF days. And the soda I drink is GF. Any ideas? Confused

I had to stop drinking diet coke because it gave me problems with the big D if I drank a lot, I have no trouble with diet pepsi however. Confused

Os, I don't have any ideas. Cokes are supposedly GF, but if it's still giving you problems, there's room in my little red wagon for you to jump on. Smile

I like a glass bottled fizzy juice called "the switch". I get it at my health food store. It's a nice treat. Smile

Wedgy.
Since you've recently gone GF, I'd guess you need to go to a very clean and basic diet for awhile. Chocolate and soda could be irritating. How does dairy treat you? You might cut back on that too. You're in an adjustment period, and you need to be gentle and nice to your stomach and body. You could also be getting sneaky gluten as described in previous posts.
I have had some problems with regular chocolate/candy,even those we consider GF, since going GF.

*jumps in SIHAD's little red wagon* Very Happy

I drink both kinds of sodas, and they all do the same thing. I'm wondering if it's the high acid content. I don't do well with things like orange juice either. How about you SIHAD? Do you have a problem with juice as well?

I got 'glutened' sick as a dog from a few sips of Classic Coca Cola.

Before I tried it, I had e-mailed the Coca Cola Company asking if it had gluten or soy, and they said it may have a tiny amount of gluten that wouldn't have an effect on most people sensitive to gluten, but the super-sensitive should be careful as it might effect them.

Well, I deleted that e-mail when I cleared out my inbox, but then the subject came up months later on another gluten-free forum, and I told them about this and someone wanted to see the e-mail.

So I e-mailed the Coke Company back, and the second one they sent me said it had no gluten in it (nor soy which also makes me sick).

But I believe the first e-mail I got from Coke was more accurate, because I know it glutened me big-time from just a few sips.

But some Celiac/gluten intolerant have no problem with Coke.

So all you can do is experiment around to see which item it was that glutened you. Coca Cola could be one of the possible culprits.

Best wishes to all.

I would have to agree with the person from the other forum in that I would very much like to see the email that stated that Classic Coke contains some gluten. The wording you used just seems odd to me "it may have a tiny amount of gluten that wouldn't have an effect on most people sensitive to gluten, but the super-sensitive should be careful as it might effect them."

It has always been my understanding that Coca Cola is GF. Perhaps there was something else you ate that day that caused your symptoms or perhaps you reacted to a different ingredient in the drink.

Coke always did have a goofy statement about it. If I remember correctly they had some percentage figure in it...like it might contain .00002% blah blah blah. I have not seen their response as of late. I feel it was more a CYA type thing.

This is not the 1st time I've heard of people reacting to Coke. It's my understanding that Coke is GF too.
