Q 4. I am allergic to Gluten/Egg/Lactose/Nuts. Does Baileys contain Gluten/Egg/Lactose/Nuts

A. Gluten: Please be advised that the whiskey used in Baileys is manufactured by fermenting grain, which contains gluten. Due to the presence of gluten in the whiskey components before distillation we cannot absolutely guarantee that there are no effects to coeliacs. As we are not qualified to give medical advice persons requiring a gluten-free diet must consult their medical adviser before consuming Baileys.

Honestly, I still don't understand how almost every other alcohol (aside from beer and malt liquor) is fine, but Bailey's is not?

Perhaps it's my own ineptitude, but I just don't get it... Confused

Al, can you help me to understand this one? I know they said it had something to do with the fermenting and distilling process, but I'm having a hard time with this one...

To be honest, I don't understand their FAQ. They talk about fermentation, then they talk about distillation...it's confusing to say the least.

To my knowledge fermentation does not remove gluten, but distillation does.

Wink Thanks, Al! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is confused!

And again, thanks for posting the status of Bailey's...it's such a shame--I actually used to like Bailey's as an after dinner drink...ah, well. It's all good. I know there's other stuff out there! Smile

My local A&P now carries Redbridge, which is nice in the summer with a Foods By George personal pizza. Smile

This may not be the right place to ask, but are most rums (at least the ones made from sugar) ok? I am dying for a good mojito since drinks made with Bailey's are out, and although I somewhat like marguaritas, I like mojitos better. Wink
