Okay...just got most of my labs back. Here's what they told me over the phone:

Endomysial anti body
<1.10 Reference Range (RR) 1.10

Gliadin antibody 2
IgA 3 RR <20
IgG 1 RR <20

tTG or was it the Anti-Transglutaminase Antibody (IgG)? 3 RR <20

Total serum IgA – not back yet.

So to me, "Dr. Lotsa Questions" Very Happy it looks like I'm not celiac or gluten sensitive. Am I right or wrong?

How important are the results of the Total Serum IgA? Will they shed any light or not make much of a difference?

Thanks.

Hi Lots,

Is your Endomysial [aka EMA] at 1.10 with a RR < 1.10 as positive?

The Total Serum IgA will tell you if you are IgA deficient. If you are IgA def. - it will skew your IgA test results [they would be low - thus giving you a false negative].

Yeah - it certainly doesn't look like there's any issues [short of the EMA question]. Did the docs explain the tests to you?

So, where do you go from here? Does the doc have any other tests or ideas up his sleeve? Remember if you're still feeling crappy, you could give the GF diet a fair trial and see how it goes.

Thanks for the update!

I believe that's what she told me. Does that sound wrong?

So, if my IgA if a false negative (meaning it could be positive)...and everything else is what it is...what does that mean?

No, I just called the office and the phone answerer read them to me. I do have an appointment next week. They may call me "officially" once the other test comes back.

HA! I thought that's what you could tell me! Wink

Not sure. I'm thinking not. She also tested my Vitamin D levels and they've dropped, so she should be treating me for that. Is that related? Could that be the causes of any of my symptoms? I have no idea. Possibly. Could definitely be linked to my hair loss. Prescription level vitamin D definitely made my S.A.D. better last winter. Don't think it has anything to do with my chronic hives or any digestive issues. I'll have to see what she is.

Yea, and she might recommend that. What if my problem is wheat instead of all of gluten? Would any of those test results be different? Are there tests for wheat intolerance?

Thanks for reading!

Hi Lots,

Yeah, that EMA reading might get you scoped. If < 1.10 is negative...you are AT 1.10...kinda sounds like something might be going on.

It's good your doc checked your Vit. D levels. Many people are low. You might check out this info and this info on Vit. D.

Do you know...did they check your B12? If I remember correctly fat soluble vitamins should be check...Vit D, E, K, A

Some explanation on CD testing: http://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/celiac_disease/sample.html

IgA Deficiency: http://www.merck.com/mmpe/sec13/ch164/ch164j.html

None of these tests would test for a wheat allergy. A wheat allergy is something completely different than Celiac Disease. The outcome is still the same - you remove the offending food - but the testing for it is different.

It will be interesting to hear what the doc has to say! Please, keep us updated.

Duh! See, this is why I post stuff...to get help from you guys. I didn't even realize the EMA was just above the reference range. Double DUH! Thanks. (weird how that cheered me up a bit. Hmmm)

She did not test for any of the other vitamin levels. Actually when she initially tested the D level it was a side thought as I asked her to check my calcium levels (I have antibodies to my parathyroid hormone and was told to check Calcium levels once a year). It came back the low side of normal and she treated. (I love her!). Felt great all winter. Now I believe I'm below what I was when she first tested. But I digress. Let me focus.

So, if the tests don't show gluten as a problem (which isn't conclusive yet), then I'm thinking the next step is to try eliminating wheat? Hmmm....which is worse (harder) eliminating wheat or eliminating gluten? Seems like they both are hidden in a lot of stuff. Anyway...doesn't matter at the moment.

After I get back from work, I will delve into all those great links you provided. Thank you very much!

Remember it's quite possible that your test results are accurate and you have another medical issue or a different food issue. Be careful not to get stuck in 'gluten tunnel vision.'

Good luck.

Yes, I'm keeping that in mind. But I've been searching for so long and I SO want to stop searching. Very Happy

Once I am convinced the gluten is not the issue, I will take what I've learned in this process and move on in my search. If only I knew which direction to move!

Thanks for responding.
