All was fine until our Norton expired. We renewed it and it was very different from the last version. Now I keep getting a message that my Java script is not enabled or that my browser does not support it, and that I need to change my browser options. When I checked in the Java file is said it was enabled. How do I change my browser options?!!!
I use Internet Explorer and Windows (not Vista - the one before it). _________________

So you're using Windows XP? Can you tell me which version of Internet Explorer you're using? To find out: open up IE, click on Help, click on About.
To make sure your Java is enabled:
1. Open IE
2. Click on Tools
3. Click on Internet Options
4. A window should pop up. Click on the Advanced tab.
5. Scroll down. There should be a section called Java. Make sure the box underneath is checked. If not, check it, then click on OK.
I'm a little confused as to why Norton would need to check on your browser settings. Everything is done through the application, not the browser. Was this part of the renewal process? Or is this just running Norton in general? _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

What version of Norton did you download? Please don't say Internet Security or 360...*fingers crossed*...please please please...
Symantec is very deceptive in how they handle their subscription renewals - IMPO. They will "guide" you do get the latest, greatest [and most expensive] version. In many cases, you only needed to get another years worth of virus updates using the same version of NAV you've already got [that's waaaay at the bottom of the list in small text]In most cases, NIS not needed or wanted. NIS [and I'm guessing 360 since it has more "features"] lock down your machine so tight it's hard to do stuff. Oh - that's when it finally gets around to doing what you asked [it slows the machine down too if you don't have sufficient memory in it]. _________________ Al

Being completely computer illiterate unlike Os and Al, I too suffered at the hands of Norton and McAfee, I couldn't make anything work right after the first year upgrade with either program and was unable to open e-mails I had to have for company work. (It looked like chinese if I could open it at all) That's when someone here (Jim, I think) recommended we use AVG and microsoft defender, its free and we have used it on all of our computers for over a year with no problems. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

Norton is infuriating! I'm the "Computer person" in the house. I know that Windows XP is the best thing Microsoft has turned out so far. Windows Vista actually isn't finished. They havn't finished patching up all the holes, and even then, i think it will be another decade before they turn out something as good as the XP! But, (back to the Norton subject) we use something called Trend Micro PC-Cillin. It. Is. AMAZING. _________________ Now faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see. -Hebrews 11:1

I use IE 7.
Os, I did what you said and the button is already checked. That is why I find this so puzzling. My husband is aggravated, too, because he can't print on-line postage now for his internet sales.
And since our van got repossessed Sunday night, we can't go the the post office. And I just discovered I can't use the emoticons - so insert picture of rolling eyes here!
Al, I don't know what Norton version it was, sorry. _________________

I'd ditch the whole thing (for now) and try to find a free (Open Source) anti-virus program. Or, if you want to stick with Norton, you can try downloading Firefox and authenticating it through there. Speaking from personal experience, Norton will work through Firefox.
DOL - They haven't finished patching up all the holes in XP either. The lack of patches in Vista isn't the problem. Vista problems run much deeper. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I fear 2008. MS will execute XP and throw Vista in it's place. Uggggh!
Thank goodness for Macs!! _________________ Al

Once we get some more money I'm seriously considering switching to OSX. I'm sick of being treated like a 3rd class citizen by MS. The only problem is 100% of our software is Windows only. Any tips? _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

OK, I fixed the problem. For anyone else who has this trouble:
In IE go to Tools and choose Internet Options. Go to the Security Panel and set the security level to MEDIUM. When the Norton updates, it resets this setting to medium-high, thus disabling scripts.
And FWIW, Java and Java Script are 2 different things. I didn't realize this until today. Geeky I am not, but I can usually figure things out eventually.
Thanks for the help! _________________

Yay Danita! I'm glad you fixed it. And don't worry, I used to get confused on Java vs. JavaScript too. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
