Tlloyd: toast the wet paper Oh I mean bread that's the only way to eat it. I am glad you are getting your child tested. There are other parents here that have children that have to be GF. My daughter has had this really nasty patches of skin on her hands. Had no idea what it was. I found out about CD, when I found out I had it, looked at pictures of the kind on your skin and she has it. She is being tested July 7. She's older thought and is ready to have kids of her own. Guess it was a good thing I got so sick I had to go to the doctor or we would still be scratching our heads on what was wrong with her hands. I'll let you know the results. Take care..............Nikki |

Nikster57 Thanks for the suggestion on the bread. I guess I'll take it out of the freezer now and try it. Glad you got your answer. |

I am writing on behalf of my husband, his is in his early 30's and had many years of gluten intake.
It took him about a month to get all of the gluten out of his system and to feel "normal" again. When he does have something that contains gluten or has been cross contaminated it takes about a week (give or take) for him to feel good again. |

Hi Nikki, The Houston group meets next in September, I think.
They meet about I-10 & Gessner - easy to reach from everywhere.
Google - Celiac Disease Houston & you should get their web site - which is excellent by the way - the director's name is Janet Rinehart - she is also or has been in the past the director for the Texas Group - she goes to all the conventions etc & is a wonderful person. Of course I love her because she looks like my family - Irish genes !!!!!!
I would give you the link - but I am not on my home computer.
Congrats on the upcoming wedding - VERY exciting. |

Jeanine: Thank you and will plan on attending. That's exciting. Maybe I will get to meet you then. By the way, I'm half cherokee and half Irish. You can't see Indian in me, I look Irish as for one of my daughters, no doubt she's part Indian. I was adopted (found Birth Mom Nov 1998)so when she came out, my swedish husband looked at me like who's kid is this? LOL LOL LOL I told him the milkman. LOL LOL LOL
Thanks for the information and I will look up the group right now.

Hi Nikki, I hope I can make the Sept meeting!!! Still mending form my broken knee! I have a half sister that her father was 1/2 Cherokee. Very good genes they have, I think!! Peaceful & artistic people not to mention the fabulous skin that does not burn!!!
It sounds like you have had so many nice things going on in your life. (finding your birth mother!) We have found who we think is a cousin thru the DNA geneology testing. He is like a brother to me - as we are a lot alike in temperment & looks! Plus he is the spitting image of my father & his brother - they died about 1956. I never knew them. So finding this cousin has been like a God sent gift. In fact I tell him all the time that he is a gift. He was left in a hotel as a baby in Corpus Christi & was adopted by some people that had money but did not treat him well.
Looking forward to meeting you. |

Becky,
I hope I'm not just barging in here...please forgive me if I am. I'm brand new, just fell off the turnip truck (gluten truck?) last week. Your mention of brain fog caught my attention, because I've been in what my kids call a "brain cloud" for several YEARS now. They have become accustomed to my blank look, then the hesitant question, "Did I know that?" I have felt like early Alzheimer's, and I know they've feared it. Was your brain fog scary? Or just, like, you couldn't find your keys? In my one week of beginner's GF diet, I am seeing a difference. Not nearly enough to sustain employment, though.
My only temptation to cheat is taking the sacrament at Church. It's only a torn scrap of bread, maybe 3/4 of an inch square. Is that enough to set off trouble? I'll do without if I have to, but to never take it again in my life would break my heart.

I believe it's up to the individual how much tolerance they would have to, say 3/4" bread. I know it'd make me regret it for a few hours, but that much wouldn't last long.
Your belief is your belief however, and like everything it would dictate/suggest in life you have to find balance. Me? If something makes me sick then I work to justify not having it while still maintaining a greater belief. |

Hi Toki'sma. Of course you aren't butting in. This is why we are all here.
It's great to hear that you are already noticing improvement. It's definitely amazing, and you'll continue to see improvement every day.
A gluten free diet does mean 100% gluten free for the rest of your life. Be glad that you don't need drugs to correct your problem. It is often inconvenient, but finally feeling well is worth it.
You must conquer your temptation to cheat. You will harm yourself and symptoms will return. Please talk to your priest about your problem. It's not uncommon. There are gluten-free alternatives.

Hi Toki'sma,
Welcome to the board!
For me brain fog was very scary! I'd just sit there sometimes in a stupor not knowing what to do. Boy...just thinking about it now...gives me the shivers.
The others are right...cheating is cheating...church or not. I don't know what faith you are, but for ELCA Lutherans, we are allowed to bring our own GF wafer. I know some Catholics have a different belief when it comes to the host & the wine. This has been quite controversial. Like Tropical said...I'd talk to your priest, pastor, spiritual leader and ask about getting GF communion for you. You even must be concerned about the wine if you are using a common cup (cross contamination).
I am glad you are here and that you are seeing improvements in your health. I think once you clean up all gluten you will see further improvements. Keep up the good work!
Hope you stick around and learn as much as you can
Take care and good luck on your GF journey! _________________ Al

Welcome Toki'sma I broke bread last Sunday(only because I forgot about the wheat), but I did not have any reaction at all that I can pen point. Maybe because it was too small. So it would be up to you, but we don't do it everyday Sunday so I may just cont. to break bread until I find out if it really has an effect on me.
