My dd is 5 1/2 and was just diagnosed with Celiac (via bloodwork and endoscopy) in Sept. 2007. She was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in Aug of 2005.
She only complained of stomach pains occasionally, but we associated with diabetes. Her doctor ran her yearly bloodwork which is how we discovered Celiac. |

Hi Daszy,
Welcome to the board!
Kudos to her Doc for being "with it" enough to test her for CD!! While the connection between the two is great - it's still often missed. It's good that it was caught yearly. It's very very common for Celiac to be silent [no outward symptoms]. Only 50% of diagnosed celiacs have gastro issues. Sadly, many will only test for CD when gastro issues present themselves [even then it's often miss diagnosed as IBD, IBS, stress, etc]
The rest of your family should be checked since it is genetic. Also, be aware that 1 negative test does not clear you for life - it can appear at any age.
Make yourself at home, browse around...there's lots of info here. I'm sure you'll have lots of question. One thing to check out if you haven't done so already is Our Thread on GF Diet Boot Camp. Lots of info there for people just starting out their GF Journey.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. _________________ Al

Hi, daszycat. My son is 8, and he was diagnosed when he was 6. He was largely asymptomatic when he was diagnosed. I would second Al's recommendation that all her first degree relatives (parents and siblings) be tested. CD is a genetic condition.
Let us know how we can help. Especially if you are looking for substitutes for gluteny childhood favorite foods! I definitely know a lot about that one. _________________ -Colleen
