I posted this in response to another thread but thought I should probably be moving it to its own. I am getting scoped from above and below next week and I really have no idea if it will yield any results.
My stomach problems are life long so I never really thought too much about them...I'm just used to living with them. I've been doubled over in pain at some point every day since I was about 5...it's just me. I'm 30, 5 feet tall, and 80 pounds. I'm usually about 85 but have dropped a bit recently. I have never had a massive weight loss, but have never been able to gain weight, no matter what. My sister and dad are also very skinny (but they also have stomach issues and indigestion).
I am going for an endoscopy and colonoscopy, not because of the "normal" stomach pains but because about half a year ago I had a week of black tarry stool which they think must have been blood from my upper GI tract. I don't know what they expect to find six months later, since I have had no problems with blood since, but that is just how long it takes for the referral and appointment. Any ulcer would likely have healed but I don't want this to be a waste so I'd like him to test for celiac when he is in there, even though those aren't the symptoms I saw him about. I haven't complained about my other symptoms or mentioned them, really, because they are life long and normal to me. I don't see the doctor again before the day of my scope. When I see him it will likely be in the surgery room. Does anyone have any idea how I can spring this on him at the last minute without sounding like a hypo "oh, by the way, can you biopsy for celiac even if everything looks normal...I just have a hunch...even though it doesn't match the symptoms I told you about". I'll only get a few words if I even get to see him before drugs so I need to make them effective. Any ideas?
Also, does anyone here have IBD? Do you know if an IBD can be detected even if you are not currently in a flare? |

Hi GG,
Welcome to the board!
Normal...yeah...lots of people are like that. They feel like garbage for so long that they just accept that as "normal" and live with it. They are not normal. I'm glad that you're going to get things checked out! With blood like that - it needs to be done.
If I remember correctly, I think I asked the Doc about grabbing samples when I was on the table! However, I think I might call the docs office and see if you can talk to the his nurse. Explain your life long problems and see if they'll take samples. Tell them you didn't go into all that the last time because you felt it was "normal". The more you asked around the more you found out that it as NOT normal. Also tell them you have a family history of gastro problems. CD is genetic - so others in your family may experience similar symptoms.
CD and present with little to no outward symptoms [atypical CD] or with all the gastro type stuff [classic CD]. Only 50% of diagnosed celiacs presented with gastro issues. The only way they're going to know is to check. Hey - as long as they're down there - they might as well. [Personally, I think samples should be grabbed during every EGD, but that's another topic ]. Also, they should grab enough samples -15 or more samples are taken by Gastro's in the know!! Most Gastro don't grab that many [3 to 8]. If they don't grab enough, they could miss some damage since it could be patchy. _________________ Al
