Do i need to buy a new toaster for myself, that way my bread is separate from their bread? I just thought of this? I feel so stupid!
I was drinking out of the same glasses as my grandchildren and not thinking about anything! It was like it used to be! I finally am getting all this cross contamination! This is scary! Please comment on this and let me know what everyone is doing? Thank you so much for all the feed back! _________________ I am a celiac, and am glutenfree, and I enjoy the forum, I love reading new sites, all the time. I would love have comments also.Forgive
me for asking alot of questions? You are all very helpful. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. |

Hey G!
Yeah, a new toaster of your own is in order. You have to make sure that it's known that it's a GF toaster - otherwise it does no good. NGF = NFG
We have a toaster oven. We also have 2 seperate racks that we slide in and out. The crumb tray gets pulled out and emptied. Mine [GF with red markings on it - the universal color for GF in our house] the other is Peg's [NGF]. We don't put NGF & GF stuff in together, besides it's not really possible.
Backwash from the glasses - well - that's never good eats even if it is GF! _________________ Al

When I was first diagnosed, I couldn't believe the toaster thing either. We have a shared toaster in the kitchen here at work. I toasted my GF bread that I had baked myself and ate it for breakfast. I got incredibly ill, and it took me 3 days to recover. Now I have my own toaster that I keep in my desk drawer that is labeled with my name.
It really is true that you can get sick from a toaster. _________________ -Colleen

Unless it is a convection oven, that is fine. If it were a convection oven, I would be worried that any breading/coating/marinade would blow off of the gluten pan into the GF one. _________________ -Colleen

In this case, I was talking about our toaster oven. There's just isn't room to have both in there.
On the very rare occasions we do cook NGF and GF food in the regular oven together, I always have the GF stuff on on the top rack. I don't want any of Peg's polluted food falling into my un-polluted food _________________ Al

When I cook food in the oven for myself and my family I wrap my foods in foil for extra protection from the gluten foods. The pans are side by side.
Since I don't even eat the gluten free breads, a seperate toaster is not necessary for me. _________________ JAIME

We upgraded to a toaster oven. If you have the room I highly suggest it. My food always goes on the top rack. That way any crumbs just fall to the NGF food. We usually cover the racks in foil so there's no CC. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

When Ina became a Celiac, I just got rid of the toaster and now we just use the broiler in my oven to toast things.....it seemed that there were always crumbs falling out of the toaster.... _________________ Connie, mom to Ina, 13 y/o with CD |

I have roommates and having 2 toasters seems like too much work, so when I toast something I put it on some foil or a cookie sheet. Not quite the same, but it works. _________________ Lauren

I'd even go as far as recommending having your own butter container - those gluten eating family members always leave nasty crumbs behind! _________________ Is your life gluten free? |

Actually having one's own condiments is by no means going far. I think it's the bare minimum if one wants to be healthy and lives with gluten eaters. |

Unless you have a strict "no double dip" rule that is enforced by dire consequences (thumb screws, for example), I would definitely get separate containers for things or get the squeezable ones. Clearly mark them and put them in a separate part of the fridge.
Makes me glad I have no gluten in my house at all. We can all double dip till our heads explode! _________________ -Colleen
