Hi Auburn,

Yeah, it takes some time to get all this figured out. Hang in there - It'll get easier!

One thing you'll find is that groups of foods [like mayo and mustard] are a bit too broad]. Hellman's Mayo [or Kraft Miracle Whip] are both GF. Brand XYZ may not be. It just depends on how they make it. The answer to your question is..."Some are, some are not".

One other thing you'll get used to doing is calling or emailing the mfg of the food to verify the product's GF status. That's the preferred method of finding out. It's not that we mind answering questions...it has to do with getting updated information [and straight from the horses mouth Wink]. Product formulation can change. There's only 2 ways to know that....1) Read the label 2)Ask the mfg.

What brands do you normally buy?

Thanks for the reply. I usually do buy Hellmans mayo and just any brand of mustand.

Do you typlically go to the mfg's web site and email customer service?

I'm going to chime in here if you don't mind.

I've had much better luck via phone calls. I'm able to ask the initial question and then ask the appropriate follow up questions. For example if a customer service rep says 'the product is gluten-free but it is made on share equipment.' I would follow up by asking what else is made on that line and how are the lines cleaned between runs. At that point I would decide for myself whether or not I'm willing to eat that product.

As for mustard, I've seen quite a few that include wheat in the ingredient list.

Thanks TEC! You know...I'd have to say I'd probably have had better luck with calling too Although it's not always easy for me to be on the phone during the day [too busying wrestling with fussy computers].

I don't always get responses back from emails. Some times it takes days for a response. Some times it's minutes to hours...

TEC, your comment and this thread has given me an idea... Maybe we should have a thread that discusses How to Ask if a product is GF. If someone is completely new to this, you may not know what questions to ask. Us "old timers" have been doing this for so long, it's 2nd nature and we don't think about it.

I'm also thinking it might a be good thread to add to Gluten Free Diet Boot Camp.

Edit to add: I started such a thread: http://www.celiacforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=6224

Many of Walmart's mustards are gluten free and are labeled that way. There mayo has the CYO statement "made in a facility that process wheat" I use all types of Miracle whip (Kraft) with no problems.

I have found much more success with calling than emailing a company. There are several companies that I would expect to provide prompt responses to me that have never emailed me back or followed up by phone even though I included my phone number in my request.
