As a matter of fact I have a box of quinoa flakes in the cabinet waiting for me to try. I hadn't come up with a way to use them except for hot cereal so maybe I'll use'em in some kind of dairy/gluten/soy/corn/yeast-free delight! Thanks Al.
What would I do without you all?

Don't wait too long or they'll grow bugs - nasty looking bugs that gave me the shivers.

More protein! LOL!

Thanks for the warning TEC. Smile

I'm a pretty adventurous eater but I would have to pass on protein that appears to be dust with wings. Eeeh

Hey gang!

So, for some strange reason, I decided to go out to Shop Rite this morning...um, yeah, I don't know how it is by you guys, but by me, going food shopping on a Sunday morning is just absolutely insane...especially around the holidays...

In any event, Shop Rite had the Bob's Red Mill GF Oats!!! Shocked So, I bought a bag of them...I don't remember how much they cost, but it wasn't all that bad, from what I remember...

And because we here in northern NJ got our first snowfall today, I celebrated by remaining in my pajamas all day while watching cheesy Xmas specials...and by making myself a bowl of OATMEAL!!! Surprised Yeah, who'd have thought I'd ever say that? Wink Anyway, that was a few hours ago, and I mixed in some raw honey...my, those oats were tasty! And NO adverse reactions yet! WHOOT! Very Happy

oooo! yay! this is so exciting. I wasn't aware of GF Oats being in the stores. I'll have to check my ShopRite and see if they have them. Mmmm. I sense delicious bowls of oatmeals and homemade apple crisp in my near future.

Please be careful Kate! Make sure you add them to your diet very, very slowly.

Kate, you can make Apple Crisp without oats. Taste is pretty close to the NGF version. Texture is less chewy than the oat version.

Ditto was Os said - just be careful!

FWIW, University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center suggests a year without oats before reintroducing them. Then get antibody levels tested, eat 1/4 cup oats for a specified period of time and antibody levels should be retested.

Sad
awww...and I'd been missing oats already, too! They're like a staple to me, especially during these lovely New England winters.
But I agree, better safe than sorry, I will wait to try them. Thanks for looking out guys! And that modified recipe looks great.

I made a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies. I thought they where awesome, I was careful and only eat one small cookie. It messed me up pretty bad. I don't think I will try oatmeal again. But on the bright side, everyone at work liked them.

So after 20 years I had a bowl of Bob's GF Oats for breakfast this AM. I am fighting the Doctor over the need to be on a statin drug for high cholesterol and Oats are supposed to be the wonder grain for lower cholesterol. Anyway my question is are they supposed to be chewy, gummy and have kind of a watery aftertaste? I added 1 T of brown sugar and 1t of cinnamon. So far I am not having a reaction to eating them, however I can't jump up and down and say I look forward to having to eat them on a regular basis. Confused Any one have any low/no fat, no cholesterol ideas on how to make eating them more fun and less like torture?

Add whatever you like to them! I was a big fan of maple syrup (sometimes brown sugar) and a little bit of milk. I know people who throw all kinds of fruit in oatmeal. They should be slightly chewy, but not gummy or watery. How'd you cook them?

Peg made some apple crisp using BRM Oats for the topping. Chewy was my 1st reaction too Smile

I'm not a big oatmeal eater [never was], so I just chalked it up to not remembering what they're really like.

I prefer my oats in bar or cookie form [or apple crisp too]. Those are probably not low nuthin'. Although the apple crisp can't be too bad.

They had microwave directions, so I used that. The texture I could live with but the watery aftertaste thing was kind of yucky. Basically they didn't have much flavor at all. I thought about milk. TEC suggested toasting them, I wonder if that would change how the water is absorbed? I don't think I was ever a big oatmeal eater, except cookies. I'm also restricted to 1500 calories and low fat right now so that really affects what I can put with it to doctor it up. I did find a receipe at Bob's for an oatmeal dessert with apple that was low fat and fairly low calorie, maybe I'll try getting oats as desert and not breakfast. Smile

What kind of oats did you eat in your pre-gluten-free days? Was it the quick cooking kind? If so, the texture of the Bob's Red Mill one will be much more substantial (ie chewy) as it is an old-fashioned or rolled oat. Quick cooking oats are cut into much smaller pieces than rolled oats so they cook more quickly. Here is a page that details the different types of oats: http://www.foodsubs.com/GrainOats.html

I cook the BRM oats using the following method. Put 1 part oats to 2 part cold water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 15 - 20 minutes until all the water is absorbed.

I have never had cooking oats in the microwave work for me. It either boils all over in the micro making a gluey mess or doesn't cook them all the way.
