DH and I are moving into our new house soon. Besides learning what light switch controls what, we'll have to learn how to cook with our new gas stove and oven. I've only ever cooked with an electric stove/oven. Do you cooking deities have any tips? Does this change any GF recipes?

I've only ever cooked with gas except when on vacation and at my granparents. You'll LOVE a gas stove. Be aware it responds immediately to any changes you make. I have no suggestions, sorry.

I've only ever used gas stoves. I love it. Especially when the electricity goes out but you can still roast marshmallows over the burners. Smile

My sister has an electric stove and she had a bit of trouble going from gas to electric -- kept burning everything. I think going the other way will be easier.

Yay Os! I was wondering how the house was coming along.
Gas stoves rule. I miss the one I had in my old house and someday we'll get off our butts and replace the pathetic electric one we have here.
Differences? Gas responds quickly and you can control it better than electric.

I grew up cooking on my mom's gas stove. I have only had electric since I have been married.

The biggest difference that you will love: being able to leave the pot on the eye when turned off and you won't burn the rice to the bottom of the pan. LOL (that first month of married life learning how to cook on an electric stove was expensive. LOL)

The gas responds better when changing the temp. YOu will prob. have to make more of an 'eye assessment' of high, med, med low and low by examining the flame.

I think that you will love your new stove! Congratulations on the hosue being ready to move in!!!

Thanks for the tips everybody! Very Happy I knew about the temperature control part, and I'm looking forward to it. I think our current electric stove goes through some serious mood swings. I can't get it to keep a constant temperature. I just didn't know if there was anything else to look forward to. At some point in the future we'll also invest in a good cast iron skillet and soup pot.

Yup, the house is pretty much done. We had our walk-through yesterday and didn't find any problems. We close next Tuesday. Smile

Yay! Congratulations on the new (almost, almost) house!

Also we chucked our electric stove the day we moved in our place and had a gas line installed so we could get a gas stove/oven. LOVE IT. Temperature control is great, immediate response, more consistent temperature (less fluctuations)... you'll just have to cook on it for a while to get used to it, once you do, you may never go back!

Congrats on the new house, Os!

One thing to be careful of is making sure the burners light.

ROFL Bud! That certainly sounds like something I would do. Laughing The builder took extra time to show us how to know when the stove/oven lights.

Seriously? Doesn't the burner go tick-tick-tick-tick and then light? FWIW I've never had to relight the pilot light in the oven.

Also just so you know, if in the summer you find yourself preparing cherry jam and it boils over while you've limped to the bathroom with your crutches and cast not realizing it got all gunked up underneath the big oval burner and and it won't light the next time you try to use it, don't call the service center. Lift the plate off, unscrew the 2 screws and clean off the sticky cherry mess for yourself...otherwise the service man may charge you $120 for telling you how to clean it. If you flirt with him he might manipulate the charges in your favor, but he's still going to make you clean up the sticky cherry mess for yourself.

Shocked

*gives TEC some more tissues and a hug*

Oh yes, it does the tick-tick-tick-light thing. But sometimes it goes tick-light, and sometimes it goes tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-light. He was mostly explaining to just be patient.

I've never been good with flirting.

Oh, Os, I'll gladly teach you the art of flirting. It's amazing the results that even the most miniscule amount of flirting can produce!

Glad you got a stove that makes the tick-tick-tick-tick noise. The last stove I had didn't make it.

Thanks for the tissues and the hug.

I have thought about putting in a gas stove, but I cannot get past the memory of my grandparents gas stove that you had to light with a match. My grandma singed all the hair off her arms and face one time when we were over there. Toasted Grandma does not smell delicious. Shocked

There is also the benefit of being able to cook even if the electricity goes out. Not sure how often that happens where you live, but it happens over here in the "Left Coast" a lot.

Hope you feel better TEC. Drink lots of OJ and eat chicken soup. Is Coldeeze GF? That stuff works miracles for getting rid of colds, but I haven't used it since my DX.

Can't say I am much of a flirt, but I have been getting a lot more male attention (Especially at work) since I started wearing makeup a few weeks ago. But keep in mind I work in IT, so most of the guys here don't have much contact with women besides their mothers whom they live with. Smile

Stop hanging around here and go back to bed TEC! We need you healthy so you can explain everything to noobs. Laughing When you're better I'll take you up on the flirting lessons.

We haven't lost electricity in awhile, but I think our apartment complex has a pretty good backup. When I was living at home it'd happen if we got a good storm. Plus if the furnace goes out in the winter you have a source of heat. Smile
