My Mom's recipe, by way of the Beter Homes and Gardens cookbook
Yield: makes 4 to 6 side-dish servings
2 cups chopped apples , unpeeled
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/4 cup finely chopped celery
1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
1/4 cup raisins (You can use grapes too)
2/3 cup frozen whipped dessert topping, thawed (I use Cool Whip Free - you can also use 1/3 cup whipping cream, although my Mom never made it that way)
1/4 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing
In a bowl, toss apples with lemon juice. Stir in celery; nuts; raisins.
For dressing, if you use whipping cream, whip it into soft peaks in a chilled bowl. Fold mayonnaise or salad dressing into whipped cream or thawed dessert topping and spread over the apple mixture. Cover and chill for 2 to 24 hours. Just before serving, fold the dressing into the apple mixture. _________________ -Colleen

Thanks for the recipe, Colleen! This was really good. I used dried cranberries in place of the raisins.
