wow that's pretty cool that in today's society you can still do canning, home made baking & growing your own produce...especially since you are working full time! I admire that! Right now we are living on one income, my husbands. I am looking for work right now but to no avail. So for now I"m a homemaker. I enjoy baking and making things home made. I wish we could grow our own produce (fruits & veggies), as that would help with cost of things. If you don't mind me asking, what religion are you a part of? Thanks again for all your helpful advice! I hope we can budget a little better but we are learning as we go...we've only been married about a month now, so hopefully we will get better at it with time.

Well....I don't know about everyone else, but I've had to move away from most packaged foods because of allergies and sensitivities (I've also reacted to guar gum, for example). I still spend a lot though b/c I've been told by my doctor to go organic - especially antibiotic free - with all of my foods whenever possible. I'm spending about twice the amount as I used to spend, BUT...I'm not buying junk food or eating out...so I suppose it balances out in the end.

I am pretty much not buying any specialty GF food right now. After not getting the results I think I need using that stuff, I decided to try a more strict and clean diet approach. I am way Naked Food right now and am trying the SCD approach. That means no grains at all, along with any complex carbs. That eliminated just about every GF specialty product, including Redbridge. I hate not having a beer! But, I am feeling a bit better with this so I am continuing on.

Hi Guys

Holy moly, I'm really envious of you guys, our grocery bill for a month here in Ireland is €1,200 ( Euro), we only have one Coeliac in the family, just goes to show how expensive Ireland is!

I make all the cakes and biscuits for my hubby, i buy pasta, and breakfast cereal.

I think that's just over $400 per week. How big is your family? When I was in Germany for Christmas I was especially surprised by the cost of those tiny containers of milk. Everything seems pricier over there...especially gasoline!

I just reread the thread and am left wondering how Momto4's family adapted to the no special order meal plan. Let us know if you read this!

I was just trying to figure out how much I spend per week on food and it makes me sick. Since last Monday, I made a few trips to the farm stand and spent $18. Today I was at TJs, Penzey's, Whole Foods & a friend's convenience store for lunchmeat and spent a total of $111. Thankfully I only make a trip to Whole Foods ever 6 weeks or so and Penzey's every 6-9 months. Last week I went to the HFS and spent $16 on 4 bags of flour. I made a few trips to the main grocery store-- $22, $13, $18. I also went to the Italian store for some much needed Rolling Eyes proscuitto and a bag of GF Italian pasta...$13. Grand total thus far* $ 211 for the week.

*I have yet to run to Walmart this afternoon...

Thats for 2 adults ( one Coeliac) and two children. Some months I would spend more than €1,200, thats for a cheap month. Thats strictly for food, If I bought wine, or treats it would be extra.

That is one of the things that I am most afraid of is spending too much. I am not much of a baker. I didn't look at the mixes, but are the bread mixes cheaper than the loaves?? I am definitely not a from scratch person. Glutino products seem to be way more expensive than other brands. Does anyone notice a difference? I also don't know how much I spend on groceries. I haven't gotten to the shampoos and toothpastes yet to go GF there as well.

One of the things you might want to do Fifi is make a budget. DH and I collected our grocery receipts for awhile to figure out how much we were spending per month. Money allowed for groceries - money spent on groceries = a little extra money for GF products.

I've found the mixes are cheaper than the loaves, especially if you make the mixes yourself. They can be stored for months in airtight containers. I understand the baking thing. I wasn't much of a baker either before going GF, unless you count cake-in-a-box mixes. Wink There's a bunch of awesome cooks on this board. You can check out some of their stuff in the recipes section. And don't hesitate to post any questions in the recipe discussion section.
