Al,
I see that this list is over a year old. I'm wondering if it is still current. Edited to add that I see the list was updated in December.
The major allergens are wheat, dairy, shellfish, eggs, treenuts, peanuts and two others. Thus, we need to call on the barley, rye and oats. Am I interpreting this correctly?
Thanks for the help.

I love companies that are so willing to help us out by listing all the ingredients. They make life so much easier. I always bring my cell phone with me when I shop now. If I find a product that looks like it may be gluten free but I am not sure, I just simply call the 800 number and ask. Most companies are easily reached Monday- Friday during normal working hours, some bigger companies even on the weekends! When a company sends me a list of their GF products, I always send them a thank you card. I have even had a couple call backs from companies who thank me for my thank you card!

I haven't called a lot of them, but those I did call, have been accurate numbers. I've added one or two numbers to it as I have run across companies I have called that weren't on here.

bump. There's another list around here that TEC post, but I'm having trouble finding it.
TEC also posted this in another post. I feel it fits well here...so I'm stealing it hehehehe Great info TEC, thanks!!
Kraft, ConAgra, General Mills are some of the biggies in the food industry. So, buy purchasing products from these companies, you know you can read the labels and figure out if a product if GF. What better way to reward these companies for adopting good labeling practices than by purchasing their products!

You can either print it off from the internet and take it with you, or they can do it there. Be wary - different locations have differing levels of ubderstanding, so you may still have to coach them. Have fun! _________________ -Colleen

NOTE: This was was updated from the original post on 12/1/05. That date of this list was July 2005. There are many more companies list now, than on the prev. list
Edit 12/16/06 - To remove Hershey from the list. They can not tell us if their "natural flavors" contain gluten or not.

I'm new to the group but called Hershey's yesterday and asked about their candy being GF. I don't have the list in front of me but remember peppermint patties, reese's pb cups, milk chocolate bar w/ and w/o almonds, kisses, morsels, baking semisweet chocolate, syrup, and a few others were GF according to the rep. Any of you disagree? Something out there that I don't know? Also, I'm confused as to what 'natural flavor' and 'modified starch', etc means....this means there's gluten in it?? Also, I noticed Al, I think said, something about celiacs also not being able to consume dairy. Al, is this another allergy you have along with CD? I was told that milk was OK to have. |

Hi Jenn,
People seem to get different answers to the same questions when they've talked to Hershey's, nor do they seem to answer them in a clear manor.
Here's a thread sharing said frustration: http://www.celiacforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=4672
Natural Flavors and Modified Starch may contain gluten. This labeling as it is, wheat must be listed on the label. This is not true for barley [ie malt], rye. There are some places that you can get hidden gluten from a product - unless you know a company discloses all forms of gluten [wheat, barely, rye & oats] in the labeling practice. Kraft, ConAgra, Unilever, Hormel are a few of the companies that won't hide gluten [even though by law they only have to label wheat - not barley, rye or oats].
If I remember correctly - in the US - Modified Food Starch is generally corn. Maybe some can verify that for me.
As for dairy. Some celiacs [due to their villi damage] are lactose intolerant. This means they can not break down the sugar component in milk because they lack the enzyme Lactase. Lactase is produced by...you guessed it...the villi. Once the villi heal, many find the they can tolerate some dairy.
Also with dairy there is the protein component - Casein. Some people have issues with casein. This is not due to CD per se. Many times when someone has issues with one food group - there can be others. Corn, Soy, Rice, etc... _________________ Al

Another list of companies that do not hide gluten. I don't know how many of these are repeats from the ones above, but I am putting it here for reference.

Maybe we should update this thread and put all the info together? _________________ -Colleen
