Hey all,

I have a quick question for you...
I came down with tonsillitis about 3 weeks ago...the doctor prescribed Ceftin. I took the entire course of antibiotics, to no avail. I went back, and my tonsils were still just as swollen...they have now put me on Clindomycin (sp?), which I have been on for about a week now...still no effect on my tonsils...and I have always been really good about taking my meds. I have to take these suckers three times a day, and it hasn't helped a bit! Sad I'm supposed to get my tonsils taken out at the end of the month, but I can't get them removed if they are still this swollen! (Yes, they're touching my uvula--the thing that hangs down in the back of my throat--now...) They don't hurt per se, but it's been difficult to breathe and swallow, and I don't sleep very well...

Any ideas/suggestions?

Have you talked to your doc about how little they're helping?

ACK! It's no fun. Gosh T - I hope the swelling goes down!!

I had my tonsils out when I was 5 or 6.

Take care!

Torrey, soooo sorry you are sick....My Youngest son, Alex, had really bad tonsils when we adopted him from Romania...his tonsils were very large and touching his uvula and causing sleep apnea, snoring, a froggy voice, very noisy breathing and constant tonsilitis and strep throat....the doctor that removed them said that he had never in his career seen tonsils as large as Alex's...and this was an older and very experienced doctor...my point is that they removed them even though they were huge....but it may be different with children...he did need to stay a night in the hospital after the removal and he was on oxygen for 24 hours b/c he had to re-learn to breathe properly...he was on what they call oxygen drive prior to the removal of his tonsils.....my suggestions to you are to sleep with your head elevated b/c it makes it easier to breathe, make sure that you are drinking lots and lots of liquids..try hot mint teas and apple cider....avoid all milk products b/c they increase mucus which you don't need right now....on the bright side Alex has not had strep throat or tonsilitis since his tonsils were removed...I sure wish you luck, and you are in my prayers.....

Ok, so the doc said for me to continue on with the Clindomycin...but he added a corticosteroid (a prednisone derivative) and another antibiotic. If this doesn't get my tonsils reduced in size, I don't know what will! Wink

This is probably a stupid question, but have you tried lots of cold food, like popsicles? I was thinking it might help a little with the swelling (as a compliment to the drugs).

There are no stupid questions, Os!
That's actually a good suggestion, and now that the weather is getting somewhat warmer, I can eat cold foods without freezing my hiney off! Wink
I may have to invest in those Edy's Whole Fruit bars....mmm...

Hehehe, we're not allowed to have those Whole Fruit bars in the house. DH would eat the whole box in one sitting and make himself sick.

I was thinking more like plain popsicles...basically frozen Kool-Aid. I imagine any chunks (like fruit) going down your throat would irritate your tonsils.

Warm food might help too. Have you tried things like broth? How's that soup making your throat feel?

I have my pre-assessment testing tomorrow...that's when they do all the blood work and what have you...
Hopefully, it will all go well and everything will be fine...
*crosses fingers*
As it stands now, I get all that lab work done tomorrow, I have my pre-op appointment (with my doc) on Monday, and then the suckers are supposed to be removed at 8:45 next Friday morning (the 28th)...
I'm not looking forward to the pain that's going to come, but I think it will be worth it...

Hi T,

Hope you're home resting comfortably and your BF is serving you popsicles by the freezer-loads!

Smile
