Nice to find this board since I have found online people to be more intelligent than doctors..

Well here is the thing for me, I have started to wonder if I have some form of gluten/what intolerance. I know for sure it's not celiac because I have only one symptom. When I eat wheat I get like diarreah. But it's not that I have to go to the bathroom many times. It's just very loose stools like diarreah but no cramping at all. It happens with oats and wheat. Particulary whole wheat bread or anything granola. Any white bread is fine. I'm begining to notice more as I have wanted to do organic diet and well whole wheat bread and grains are suppose to be good but I get this side effect. I also have the same effect if I eat animal fat (like the skin of chicken) but I have known that long time ago and the doctor says it's that i don't have enzymes to digest this kind of fat. I don't want to talk to doctor about this because they have just labeled me with IBS.

So what do you guys think? Is this could be just normal side effect of fiber? or maybe it is wheat intolerance? I will appreciate your feedback.

Hi. Just want to comment on a couple of things.

Having only one symptom does not mean a person doesn't have Celiac disease. Many people with celiac have no symptoms.

People often have problems for a while when they change their diet drastically. Especially when you add a lot of fiber if you've eaten a relatively low fiber diet in the past. If you give it a little time and add the high-fiber foods in gradually that should help. The oats and whole wheat make it sound like it could be a fiber issue. FWIW, years ago when I was making a lot of homemade granola with tons of oats, dried fruits, and seeds/nuts, I could only eat about 1/3 c. of it every other day. Any more and I had problems Shocked .

I just have to say this. Please do not be offended, because no offense is intended. People on this board are not doctors. We cannot examine, diagnose, or treat anyone. There is a lot of good info here, and the people on this board work hard to make sure it's accurate info. With what a lot of people have gone through to get, or not get, a diagnosis, there is a fair degree of frustration with doctors (and rightly so). However, there are a lot of good doctors out there. Doctors go through very rigorous training to be able to put MD after their name, and most of them care very much about their profession and their patients. Unfortunately training for docs on CD/GI seems not to have caught up with the science in all cases. There are some really good doctors out there trying to change that. I think when we make broad statements about people on-line being more intelligent than doctors then we are doing them, and us, a disservice that only perpetuates a "them vs. us" mentality that does nothing to move us in a forward direction.

Good luck finding the answers you need.

Hi Night,

Welcome to the board! Diagnosing CD solely based on the number of symptoms doesn't always work. CD can present with with little to no outward symptoms...or...a whole bunch - many times appearing unrelated. Dr. Peter Green [a celiac expert in NY] states that there's between 200-300 sx's associated with CD.

Since doctors aren't in the picture for you, you've got elimination diet as an option. If you wanted to see if you're reacting to gluten, you could order a stool test from EnteroLab. It might give a clue if you are going in the right direction.

Certainly it could be a fiber issue. What happens if you eat a bunch of high fiber veggies? A large influx of fiber can cause bloating, gas, etc.

Good luck in your Knowledge Quest! Keep reading, keep learning, keep asking questions.

Very nicely worded Steph! Thanks!

Nightangel, white bread has wheat in it also:) so i dont think its the wheat but maybe the bran... i dont know i am not a dr. but if you follow this link here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_bread it explains the difference in white and wheat breads. in white bread the germ and bran is removed. maybe you have an allergy to one of those as you dont have a problem with white bread. just a thought hope this helps some Very Happy

For what it's worth:

Quote:
5. Myth or Fact: Foods that contain insoluble fiber (which does not dissolve in water) cause less gas and bloating than foods with soluble fiber (which does dissolve in water).

Answer: Fact. According to Moyad, most folks are astounded to discover that what they perceived as a "gentler" form of fiber -- the soluble kind found in foods like oat bran, beans, peas, and citrus fruits -- can actually cause more gas and bloating than insoluble fiber, found in foods like whole-wheat bread, wheat cereals, cabbage, beets, and carrots. "It is true," says Moyad. "And the reason is that gas and bloating result from intestinal flora that is needed to digest soluble fiber." Since insoluble fiber is not digested at all -- it goes right through you -- there is no interaction with intestinal flora; consequently, no gas is formed.

One caveat to keep in mind: While insoluble fiber won't give you gas, it can increase the frequency and size of bowel movements.

Thank you very much for the feedback. I think that entero test sounds like a good idea. I'm paying much attention as to when I see symptoms and what I eat in the day. There is something giving me this reaction. I eat spelt bread this morning and it went through me. About an hour later and I'm in the bathroom. So I know for sure it happens with wheat breads or any whole grain bread and any wheat or bran cereal. However I have no problem with wheat pasta but I'm gonna eat again of it to confirm.

Have you tried keeping a food diary...where you log everything you ingest and also keep track of all your symptoms? I'm doing it now to make sure that I don't have to eliminate anything else but gluten. If you aren't sure what is making you sick and when, it is helpful to be able to look back at weeks at a time and not have to try and remember all the timing of all the things you ate and what happened. Sometimes you might have delayed symptoms and with a diary a pattern may emerge!

And to Steph, I really appreciated your post. I actually am in the medical field...and have wanted to write something similar in the past but would never have worded it quite so nicely. Thanks.

Nightangel73- I hope you figure out what is making you sick. Good luck.
