I saw this website http://www.bellinstitute.com/wic/topic/section_detail.aspx?cat_1=200&selectCatID=200&catID=200&itemID=6173 that claimed Rice Chex to now be gluten free. I sent email to General Mills and they confirmed that it was a new formulation that no longer contained barley malt extract. They also said that it's very new and may not be in all stores until late in May. I checked my local supermarket yesterday and noticed two slightly different boxes. Sure enough one listed barley malt extract and the other one did not. The one without it also had the statement "gluten free" on the box.

This is good news for anyone looking for a mainstream cereal to eat.

That is totaly cool! I wish they would make the corn chex GF too - that's my favorite flavor. I cross posted this over to the other big celiac boards. But you saw it here first! Very Happy

That's awesome! I'm surprised General Mills put the GF label on it. Kinda out of character for them.

GM does go above and beyond in their labeling [they will list all forms of gluten]. Horry for GM! Lets see if they keep this formula.

Has anyone heard of CC issues with GM?
I wonder if they are getting ready for August and the new labeling?
I also wonder if they tested this product. Sounds like an interesting question to ask 'em.

Just came back from the store. Our local Wal Mart had them and like buzzard said,it does say gluten free on the front of the box! I never realized how many Rice Chex varieties there are . The only one without the malt is the regular flavor. I wonder why out of all the products General Mill's produces, why they decided to label one cereal as gluten free?

I went out a lunch to buy a box and found it at the first store I went to. Not only does it say gluten free on the front of the box, there is a couple of sentences on the back of the box talking about how it is a good choice for those following a gluten free lifestyle.

Someone actually asked me why I was hugging a box of cereal when I came back to work. The nerve! Tell us more, Buzzard, what other good news do you have to share with us? Very Happy

I know how you feel! It is so good to eat "regular food" that everyone can eat. It is so hard being different.

Rice Chex is one of the sponsors for the Celiac Disease foundation conference this year. They really seem to be taking this seriously.

PS - I hope Buzzard didn't think I was stealing his/her thunder by posting this on the other celiac boards. I just think the more people that know about this the better. I think we should all send a thank you note to General Mills to let them know how grateful we are.

This is such great news! I'm so sick of Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles! The children don't mind, but mom would like a more "grown up" cereal in the morning!!! Very Happy

Thanks for this wonderful bit of news!!!

Just the other day as I was gazing into my crystal ball, I saw Chex Party Mix in my future, but I threw the ball away thinking it had to be defective! (KIDDING!!!)

But YAY!!! I don't care if Chex Party mix has only one kind of Chex in it. Rice has always been my favorite flavor anyway!

I'm amazed since going GF what little things can make me happy. Maybe that's one of the good things about CD. It turns the little things that are such a big part of our lives into moments of thankfulness, and gratitude. I no longer take a meal in a restaurant, a piece of cake, or a friend's thoughtfulness for granted. I see those things for the gifts they are. I tried never to take any of those things for granted, but I saw them as everyday events, and now they are shining moments (if that doesn't sound too corny). I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. I'm probably not as articulate as I could be.

Steph

Second everything Steph said, including the part about the Chex mix. It's the little things in life. Smile
