Greetings,

I had bleeding duodenal ulcers at ages 13 and 15, but was not knowingly gluten sensitive until age 44 (4 years ago). Since my mother also had duodenal ulcers at an early age, I assumed it to just be an inherited phenomenon.

Now that I know much more about celiac, I realize that she probably has celiac as well (short stature, early osteoporosis, a variety of digestive disorders, late onset type 1 diabetes), but remains undiagnosed and unwilling to be tested, or to pursue the diet.

Anyway, my question in the way of an informal poll is: how many others have a history of duodenal or stomach ulcers?

Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you on this.

Dude,

Welcome to the board!

Sorry to hear about your Mom. Many are unwilling to do what it takes - sad to say. Glad you are being proactive about it.

No ulcers here...just wanted to say HI and welcome you!

Postbulbar duodenal ulceration and stenosis associated with celiac disease.

The case histories of five patients with celiac disease and postbulbar duodenal ulceration and stenosis are presented. Celiac disease was unexpected in three of the five patients until endoscopic biopsy revealed villous atrophy. Our findings suggest that duodenal ulceration and stenosis may be a more common complication of celiac disease than previously thought and may precede the clinical diagnosis of celiac disease or occur when there are minimal symptoms and nonspecific radiographic findings for the disease.

I've had an ulcer. There have been ulcers on both maternal and paternal sides of my family. My father is from a family of 11 children, and he and I figured out that at least 9 of the children (himself included) had ulcers.

On my mother's side, my mother, grandmother, and I think a couple of her brothers have had ulcers. My grandmother had 4/5 of her stomach removed in the days when that was the only treatment. I really suspect she had celiac.

Now you've got me wondering if the CD comes from both sides of the family, considering the high prevalence of ulcers on both sides, not to mention the high percent of 1st degree relatives of mine that have it. Only about 20% of first degree relatives are supposed to have CD, or is it 1 in 20? My family is way beyond that already, with several more suspected. I just always assumed that it came from my mother's side of the family. And, if the stat is one in 20, we are way out of the ball park.

Not only do I have cd but I was also dignosed with Barretts esophagus. Does anyone else suffer from this??? Supposedly it is from acid reflux, which relates to my cd?? And it will never heal or go away. with medication, it just won't get worse. Is this common with cd??
