I couldn't resist...
The practice sort of theoretically makes sense. But what's described in the posts above seems like it is just a reflection of your natural instinct on the food...sort of like going with your gut reaction (no pun intended).
Of course food has energy - it's called calories. And the more calories it has, the more I fall back from the food too! _________________ Somebody told me that this is the place

I have recently started eating gf oats from Bob's Red Mill. Despite the fact that I have been ultra-sensitive to everything, and felt I had one foot in the grave prior to my Celiac diagnosis, I have had NO bad reactions to these oats! I don't eat oats very often, just in case.
This is very good news for me. Oats were always one of my very favorite foods. I love having a nice bowl of oatmeal with bananas, brown sugar, and (now) rice milk. My daughter and I recently made oat cakes, which were heavenly (although terribly bland to the rest of the family...). I look forward to oatmeal chocolate cookies at some point. |

| The rumor mill has it that UCCDC will be updating their 'official position' on GF oats in the very near future. |

Perhaps now is the future. This sounds pretty official...

| Quote: | A note about oats: Historically, oats were not recommended because it was thought that avenin (the storage protein found in oats) was also toxic to gluten-intolerant individuals. However, recent research in Europe and the US has described that oats are well-tolerated by most children and adults when consumed in moderation and do not contribute to abdominal symptoms, nor prevent intestinal healing.
PLEASE NOTE: regular, commercially available oats are frequently contaminated with wheat or barley. However, "pure, uncontaminated" oats have recently become available from several companies in the US and Canada. These companies' process oats in dedicated facilities and their oats are tested for purity. Pure, uncontaminated oats can be consumed safely in quantities < 1 cup per day. It is important that you talk to your physician and your registered dietitian prior to starting oats. |
