Hand mixers have nasty little vent holes that get filled with gluten when you are mixing.

I'm glad to hear you're feeling a little less overwhelmed. Take it one step at a time and you'll be fine. It's sort of like taking a course in school. If you pick up a 500 page text book the first day of school, you open it and think 'I'll never learn all this!' But you attend the classes every day, and learn chapter by chapter, and by the end of it you're amazed to find out that you did, indeed, learn all that.

I'm not offended. Wink What I was trying to say (badly?) is that if we can do it, you can too. We are all overwhelmed in the beginning. The diet is doable, but it's hard at first. Just do one thing at a time. Look at the boot camp thread, scale back to simple, naked food, and build up from there.

In the General Discussion forum (I think that is the appropriate place) I will talk about the effects of chemical sensitivity. I've heard that it is common for people with chemical sensitivity to end up with gluten sensitivity so maybe there will be a discussion about this on that thread.

Wow, I never thought about the hand mixer and I've been at this for two years. The beaters got scrubbed thoroughly when I was first cleaning out the ktichen, of course, but I never considered replacing the gadget itself. Thanks for the tip.

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to say hello real quick. I'm making some progress. Wanted to give you some good news. Today I made it through work without leaving or feeling horrible. And I'm learning to read ingredients on EVERYTHING. I still have a lot to learn. Hopefully, things will continue to progress. I'm going to start reading some more on the forums and learning the ins and outs as I have time.

CruelShoes, I'm glad that you weren't offended.

Hey Everyone,

I saw my PCP the other day to check the thyroid, and they are checking iron levels and a few other things. I saw my doc today that originally said that I have Gluten Intolerance, and he looked at my Enterolab scores and confirmed that I definitely am gluten intolerant. He discussed a ton of stuff with me today that was extremely helpful, and confirmed that I should get rid of bath and beauty products with gluten in it, as well as avoiding the foods.

Please- can anybody give me a list of what ingredients in bath and beauty products to watch out for? At least so that if I can quickly read what I'm using at the moment, I might know.

I'm still working on my kitchen as a priority, but will need this info.

Also, since I am allergic to dairy proteins, I started researching alternate names for those in products. I had not realized that casein and whey can also be hidden under "natural flavors" etc. However, when I called Target to check my marshmellows, she said that "milk is one of the top 8 allergens and if any of the ingredients had hidden milk, it would be listed." The casein free sight suggested calling companies to verify what is in their "natural flavors" just like we are doing for gluten. But, is this really necessary? With the current labeling laws, won't milk always be listed if its in there? Also, with the current labeling laws, is it really necessary to call to check about gluten in the ingredients?

As far as beauty products are concerned, I looked for

WHEAT
TRITICALE

I don't know of any other terms, but I guess any of the names of the whole grains with gluten would be included.

Anyone else know of more?

When I went GF someone told me to watch out for cosmetics and soaps, because some of them are made from recycled fats that are sold when restaurants etc. clean out their fryers. Supposedly even though the fats are cleaned, the concern is that there might have been gluten items fried in the fats, hence CC potential. I have no idea if this is correct information. I'm just putting it on the table in hopes someone can confirm or refute it.

I do know a lot of beauty items are big on using wheat germ oil, so I'd be on the look-out for that.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm thinking about just making a huge box of stuff and giving it to my neice and all of the girls in the family. And learning to live with limited make-up colors. Maybe buy a new safe eye shadow. I don't know what I'll do about my lipsticks and eye liners though. I have tons of colors. Replacing those would be way expensive. I'll approach this at some time. Still haven't finished working on my kitchen. Thanks for the heads-up.

Cosmetic ingredients

Any milk derivative must be declared by law. It is the same for wheat, but not for gluten. Barley, rye and oats are not in the top 8 allergens, so they are not required to be disclosed.
