The news today is all about food shortages, especially rice. I'm thinking it's bound to affect all of us with CD in terms of prices of GF products, etc.

There was a similar story posted over on Delphi yesterday. It's scary stuff.

Last night's 20/20 had a similar article (discussion?). The prices for wheat, corn, and oil have all skyrocketed.

"The days of cheap food are gone" - I heard this comment on NPR yesterday. I agree, and it is scary.

I'm not usually a "doom and gloom" sort of person, but I have been really concerned about people who live on fixed incomes. Are some people going to have to choose between eating and heating? I know there is help available for people, but a lot of people cannot bring themselves to ask for it.

DH works with some families like that. Usually it comes down to the parents eating vs. the kids eating. The kids win. Even food stamps aren't enough to cover the costs of feeding a family.

I stopped by an asian market on my way home last night to see what was to see. They had plenty of rice, but they were limiting people to 50#. I think I am going to buy some next Friday when I get paid.

I broke down and bought a 20# bag of brown rice yesterday. I think it was the first time I have ever seen brown rice cheaper than white rice.

Here is another article to add to the discussion. It's about how stockpiling food (food storage) is almost as good as a savings plan.

http://finance.yahoo.com/banking-budgeting/article/104914/Load-Up-the-Pantry

Is the rest of the world finally catching on that buying ahead and buying in bulk makes good financial sense? We celiacs could have told them a long time ago!

DH and I had an interesting discussion last night. We were talking about the economy woes, and how experts aren't sure what percentage of the population will use their rebate checks on food vs. new TVs. They said they'd rather have people spend the money on food because most of it's grown in the US. Gas/clothes/gadgets are all produced overseas.

So we got to talking about GF food. I mentioned that I thought most of it is produced in the US. Can you think of any pre-packed GF foods that come from overseas?

Glutino pretzels are made in Israel, and imported from Canada.

I was thinking the 365 and EnviroKids brands are made here. Will have to go verify....

In the meantime, back on topic: they're starting to talk about wheat shortages too.

I've heard that too. I guess we're safe there. However, shortages of one grain is bound to drive up the prices of others as people start demanding others to make up for the shortfall in some grains.

I've also heard something about cooking oils....

Corn is in high demand right now. We want it for fuel, and other countries want it for cooking oil. They talk about it a little in the article I linked. Is that what you're referring to?

I dunno if we're "safe". If anything, those of us who live in a GF/NGF house (like me) will watch the prices of NGF bread start to rise.

Apparently food snobs are feeling the hit too.

People like this make me ill. "Waaa! Waaa! The market sucks and I have no money! But I'll still spend $22 on a pound of cheese." Please. Suck it up and eat like normal people for awhile (at least until the recession clears up). Your taste buds won't explode. I promise.
