I am new to all this. I am not sure yet if my dental problems are related to gluten sensitivity, but I have had lots of caries starting especially between teeth and the whiteness goes away with eating or drinking but comes back with brushing (used to stay white for several months or more in a row).
I felt that no matter what I used to brush and how many times I flossed, my mouth was under siege and not fresh and I could feel tarter on my teeth even after brushing.
In the interest of full disclosure I will share that I also had a root canal fail and result in a bone infection, which was addressed in January. I don't think that was g/s related.
My dentist gave me Peridex oral rinse to deal with the failed root canal, injured gum and bone infection. I find this rinse to be fantastic! It seems to really tackle what feels like tarter that was refusing to cooperate. Then, it also gets the gums really healthy and the teeth white.
The other product that they gave me to address the new caries is called: GC MI Paste Plus. It is supposed to recalcify the teeth. It takes several months of daily use. I don't know if anything has improved since I started using it as it is too soon. (This product contains Recaldent which is derived from milk casein.)
Has anyone one used this product or something similar to deal with the dental problems that can come with gluten sensitivity? How did it work for you? How long did it take before you experienced success? Are you able to stop using it or do you have to keep using it--or do dental issues only come up when you are eating gluten on a regular basis so don't need to recalcify after the original problem is addressed and you are not longer eating gluten.
Thanks! |

| OMG, you read my mind! I was just about to post the same question. I just saw that commercial with the lady with the black light behind her teeth-you could see through them. Has anyone tried any of the OTC brands? I am so new to this that the ingredients are overwhelming and I really don't know what to look for. |

Well, the PERIDEX is a god send for my mouth. No matter how much a brushed or flossed it just wasn't acting normal and getting rid of bacteria properly.
The MI Paste provides slow results. It really takes months. My doctor wanted to check me at 6 months.
I wondered if she thought that my problems were from celiac (don't know if I have it yet) and she said that the people she sees with celiac usually have much worse damage.
So, another mystery.
Anyway, the MI Paste states that there is caseine (sp?) in it. So not good for people with that sensitivitiy. I don't think it is sold by perscription, but that my dentist did carry it.
I would love to hear feed back from others on this. |

People usually go many years before getting a dx of CD, which might give the disease plenty of time to do a lot of damage. Maybe if your dental issues are related to CD you caught it early enough to prevent a lot of damage. _________________ Steph |

That could be.
I had a dream that I was going through old papers and found a newpaper clipping saying that I had severe intestinal damage from celiac. The public knew but no one told me.
In real life, so many things are just a mystery. I hope to get the results of my blood test soon. Other things will make more sense as I go on being gf and see what symptoms improve or disappear, and with the inevitable slip up, and then see what symptoms come back. |

I dunno what to add other than I am subscribing and I feel your pain.
It's been 2 years of "full gluten-freedom" with some slipups, and I have had two of my bottom teeth to have slivers come off, and one of my top front teeth to do the same in the last two months.
My grandmother who refuses to even TRY our gluten free food lost all of her teeth after having my mom's older sister.. and my poor sister has had dental issues her entire life... so I coulda told most people before the Dental+CD link was met that there was one..
I'll keep my ears peeled for now, as I never had any trouble (other than 4 cavities around age 22) before making the diet switch... _________________

| Oh, I see. Your message was thoroughly terrifying. I think above all, when I imagine myself getting fit and strong (from being gf for a while) and planning a little cheat, the thought of dental issues is sobering enough to dispell the fantasy. Above all, that scares me the most. |

Wow! Thank you guys so much for bringing this topic up! You know, I never knew that there are dental issues with people that have CD. I guess I have been lucky in the dental area then. I went the other day and the checkup went very well. It had been way to long since I had gone to the dentist (lack of insurance) but everything went great.
I recently have started to use a tooth polish (tooth paste) that I absolutely love! It is from Melaleuca. It contains propulus (spelling) which prevents the plaque from adhearing to your teeth. Also tropacol (spelling) that begins to rebuild the enamel. Works great for sensative teeth too. I have CD like many of us here and love.... this tooth paste! Feels like I just left the dentist each brushing!! _________________ Sarah |

Totally understood.. and sorry for that!
I found out this week I have thyroid issues now, which explains why I had some teeth to break off small slivers of themselves recently-- even though I have been using a "wonderful flouride filled toothpaste" that is supposed to assist and keep things like that happening..
The issue I have is malabsorption of iron, calcium, zinc, selinium and I think b vitamins.. but it didn't get caught until I raised alarm after my iron went down "low" and I started putting my symtoms together and asked my doctor just as a precaution to check my levels to put us both at ease.
Now I'm going "AHA! so that explains it!!" -- as I have been drinking milk that is otherwise unaltered (only pasteurized) and had been getting a good deal of cheese and yoghurt downed as well... it just makes you go hmmm...
The more I look around, the more I see the dental issues with CD being hand in hand and a few other issues that are existant in "silent" Celiac disease and latent hypo or hyper thyroidism..
It kind of wakes you up to how your body works and how to get it back up and running and all that good stuff. . . and it makes you wonder...
Were it not for the "ikky" stuff that goes with doctoring and dentistry, I'd sign up, because it is curious to figure out how this all works *with* celiac related issues.. I like knowing in the event I need to know... whereas DH tries to ascribe it to hypocondria or me just being "too nosy". _________________

This happens with hypothyroidism? I was hyperthy for a few years. Then my body crashed when I was poisoned, and I was hypo. I am in line now. |

I dunno.. they say it can happen in pregnancy and sometimes with thyroid issues... something to do with not enough calcium, which I so have to laugh.. I am getting so much calcium people wonder how I afford the dairy! _________________

oh, interesting. I do know of increased bleeding gums with pregnancy. I never understood why that happens.
Your cartoon footer is so adorable. Good luck on your delivery. Not long now! |

Hello...
would you be kind enough to explain to me the meaning of the word "slivers"????
For me the dental issue has to do with the loss of enamel. Two bottom teeth are no longer white but almost brown.....it is so embarassing cause I brash my teeth 3 times a day, I use mouthwash, I eat no sugar at all and I hate that thing. I am going to visit my dentist next week and I hope she will tell me "we will fix it".....
