Hello Meline,
I used the Google English to Greek translator. I hope it gives you the definition you are looking for, because I have no way of knowing if it translated accurately since I don't know Greek. There was no word for sliver, so I used the English word splinter, which means basically the same thing in English. Here's the word I got: διασπώνται

Here's the Google link in case you need a translation at another time.

Hope this helps!

Meline,

What is it like to be gluten free in Greece/Europe? Is it easy to find safe food? Do people seem to understand what you need?

Well it is not easy at all....In greece 1 in 11.000 is a celiac ....so in a country of 11.000.000 people that means there are about 1.000 celiacs in the whole country....My pathologist had never seen any other celiac in his life......And you can understand that it is really hard for me to find safe food, there are not many options. There are few stores that have a small variety of gf products. Of course there are no gf restaurants, and no one has ever heard of celiac before, so I have to keep telling that I have an allergy in order to avoid cc. And unfortunately some times people in healhty stores are ignorant. There was one who told me to get spelt (dinkel) for gf bread.....(spelt has gluten, only difference it is less than other bread). Back then I didn't know that, and of course I got so sick and my face had that ekzema again....

But it is ok, people may not know but they are willing to help you if you explain. We are now trying to run a forum for greek celiacs. Until now there are about 20 members!!! That is a progress!!!

For the rest of europe I can only tell you about Italy. I've been there for 2 days and things seem to be better. People knew and there were some gf products in some stores.

Kisses!!! Meline

Wow, you are a trail blazer! That sounds like difficult work.

Several years ago, I studied abroad in Barcelona. I met a girl there who couldn't eat wheat. She said she had an allergy and would just tell all the waiters that. She wasn't concerned about rye or barley or anything but wheat, so she must have really had an allergy and not celiacs disease.

She seemed to be able to communicate her needs well. No one gave her a hard time about it.

Are you familiar with the Triumph Dining Cards? www.triumphdining.com They are laminated cards that you give your waiter and the kitchen that explains what gluten free is. THere are 10 cards and they are each a different language. One is in Greek. That could be helpful for you.

My family is in Berlin, Germany. I can't imagine getting them to understand no flour or no bread. I am actually putting off a visit because of it.

Regarding how rare gluten intolerance is in Greece, I guess they say this is primarily an Irish disease. I went to a local support group for celiac, and everyone there looked like they could be my brother, sister, aunt or uncle! It was amazing. (I'm part Irish.)

Greeks Rates of Celiac Disease Among Lowest in Europe

Quote:
Celiac.com 01/29/2008 - If the results of a recent study are any indication, the Greeks might be among those least affected by celiac disease.

The study on the prevalence of celiac disease in Greece shows that the people of Thessaly have a prevalence of celiac disease that is among the lowest of all the European populations.

No participant with selective IgA deficiency was detected. Four individuals tested positive for EmA, all of whom were biopsy-proven coeliacs. Therefore, the prevalence of celiac disease within this general population sample is 1: 558 or 1.8 per 1000 (SE 0.13).

If it makes you feel any better, some [perhaps more that we care to think about] of our doctors have never seen it either Wink However, It's more a matter of not looking or knowing what to look for.

It appears that the doctors in Greece need to be looking too, because CD's there...Increased prevalence of silent celiac disease among Greek epileptic children.

We too have ill-informed health food store employees that recommend products that are not GF. Over all, things are getting better here. Since Italy has such a high rate of CD, the awareness is supposed to be much geater - so I've heard.

Are there laws for food labeling? It is required for companies to tell you if there's an allergen in your food?

Gosh - good luck in your GF Journey!!

Meline, on the two very front (small) bottom teeth, I just had a tiny fraction of them come off after brushing. In fact, I thought it was part of a nut at first, since I had some organic gluten free apple-cinnamon bar before I brushed my teeth. I figured it got wedged in somewhere and just appeared, but then when my tongue brushed against the edge near the bottom of the gums, I could feel a little sharp 'sting' where there was tooth before. I checked in a mirror and with some cleaning tools, and there definitely was a tiny notch gone from the two that were touching.

On the top front tooth, I had such a small peice slide off, it was like when you see a geologist working on a rock and only taking off a very small peiceof the rock to get a thin slab of slate or to see if there is a fossil inside.. It looked like a teeny tiny scratch on the tooth itself... almost like when you get a splinter. I didn't feel it break or fall off, I only felt the pain after as it was sensitive.

The dentist and hygenist checked and tapped and prodded ALL of my teeth, and save the teeny tiny cavity I've had for three years on one molar (too tiny to do anything with other than drilling really deep and making it a sensitive tooth--- and not painful at all) -- all my teeth are checking out strong as bone and no issues other than needing to be cleaned and whitened... which you can't do in pregnancy.

Right now it's wait and see, and pray that it doesn't happen again Confused

....I know that feeling!!! Omg the way you described the dental thing like the work a geologist is doing.....You really made the story so interesting! It was like I could actually see what you were describing....

Any way , I hope too that you will have no problem again. I am viditing my dentist next friday, and yes I will have hime check all my teeth..

Wish you the best with your pregnancy (spelling..?)
