Jim PM'ed me last night telling me about a new GF beer that he had a chance to try. Hehehehe Little did he know that I had had one too!! Last night we had a good ol' Wisconsin fish fry! Those of you in other parts of the US probably don't have these. Maybe in MN or MI - I don't know. But in WI, friday nights are for fish frys!! Almost every corner tavern or restaurant has them (in WI...theres a lot of taverns!! LOL).

Since being GF, this is one of things I missed the most. But since we found Dakota Lakes Gourmet Coating (Fat Free & Gluten Free), we've been having them at home. A big pile of potato salad, a mound of cole slaw, a few pounds of fish - we were ready!! The only thing missing was the beer...until last night!! I had gotten some of the New Grist Celiac Friendly beer made by LakeFront Brewery. Ahhhhh, "It's good to be da King"!! Very Happy

We had my Mom over, we'd usually go out with her on Fridays. She too said how much she missed going for fish.

This was my lunch of leftovers today Smile

Al, I think it very rude of you to not invite the rest of us over to share your leftovers! I have been missing fish. Do you pan fry yours or use a deep fryer? (Please tell me I don't have to buy a deep fryer!)

Sorry Nicki...It would've had to have been a Loaves & Fishes miracle, cuz what you saw in that picture was the last of everything. Smile

I'll add you to the list for the next time! Jim too...although there'll be one heck of a delivery charge for his!! Shocked hehehehehe

We have an electric fry pan that belongs to Peg's Mom (but lives at our house Wink)

Al,
Many local taverns in the suburbs have fish frys or fish boils on Friday nights during Lent. I haven't been to one in years. The food in the photos looks great. Is that a chicken leg I spy in the middle? Did you mail order the New Grist and the Dakota Lakes coating, or pick them up at a local source? How about a flavor description of the beer for those of us who've not tried it.

I'm only 1 hour and 45 minutes from Milwaukee, you do the math for the driving time to your next fish fry. I'll bring dessert.

Oh my, Al. That looks totally awesome. My husband doesn't drink anymore, but I've always had to pass up recipes with beer because of the gluten. No more!! How far is Boston from where you live?? I could be there for next Friday night!

Thanks gang! OH Gosh...Peg and I would LOVE to have y'all over!!! You could come and see the beautiful sights of WI!! We live about 10 min away from a resort town called Green Lake (the deepest lake in WI). This is a popular tourist area for IL residents (ie massive "cottages" on the lake).

We have had several "Close Encounters" with people we've met from the Braintalk board. They have all been fun! So, if any of the rest of you meet up..please...take some pics and share 'em!!

TEC - Here's what the "professionals" have said about New Grist..

To me...I perfer Bard's. While I like this and will buy it. New Grist does have a sour taste to it...much like the Ramapo Valley GF beer. But hey...it's beer none the less. Any beer is better than NO BEER!!!

I had heard about this beer and asked a liqour store that carries Lakefront brewery beer if they had this New Grist. They said no, but they'd try to get it. Months pass and not a word. Then about 2-3 weeks ago I get a message on my answering machine saying that my GF beer was in!!!!

COOL!! So I make the 45min 1 way trip to Appleton, WI got get some. I ask them if there's a way to try it before I buy it. The gal said..."Well, I can sell you a bottle, but you can't drink it in here. She gave me an opener and my bottle. I asked for a brown paper bag to complete ensamble. Out the door my wife & went to try the beer. We get back to the car, crack open the beer and start drinking. All the while keeping an eye for the police...boy...talk about feeling like you were back in high school!! LOL

After guzzling this beer in about 3 mins we went back to the store 2 purchase 2 6-packs. I had a minor buzz going since the last beer I had was a Bard's in June at the Gluten Intolerance Group Conference in Chicago LOL!! Bard's is the one that kept blowing the tops due to over cabonation. It is not avail in WI

While that center piece does look like a chicken drumstick..it is indeed fish. Pollack to be exact. The coating we use is pretty spicy. I decided to cut it with a bit of BH flour mix. The other reason I did this was to strech it out a bit, but we found that we liked the taste of the "cut" fish better. Yeah...we have fish frys ALL YEAR ROUND Very Happy It not just for Lent any more! LOL Very Happy Let's see...we are about 1.5 hrs from Milwaukee... Maybe we need to meet there sometime? Have you been to The Gluten Free Trading Company? . We have not been to their new store. They moved recently.

As for the coating...I got it at a health food store (owned by a celiac) in Appleton.

I remember going up to Green Lake as a teenager. I distinctly remember that lake and the algae growing in it. I had never seen anything like it. There was no way that I was going waterskiing in body of water.

I'll have to look for the New Grist the next time I'm at Whole Foods or even the local liquor store. When I find it I'll drink it out of a brown paper bag and and toast you and Peg. Have you ever tried Woodchuck Cider? I really like the green apple version. It's great for hot summer nights and it's available at most liquor stores.

Yesterday I went to the local health food for some GF products and left my list at home. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember the brand name of the coating and the brands that they sold just didn't sound right. I'll call tomorrow and see if they can get the Dakota Lakes Coating.

I've not been to the GF Trading Company. I'd be up for a road trip in the spring.

Thanks muchly Al....that looks good enough to eat Wink

I think my biggest problem is going to be finding places that will ship all these neat GF products, like the Dakota stuff and the beer, to my home here in Nova Scotia (or to find places locally that carry them). My wife and I have already resolved that if it's too hard to find stuff here in our small town, or even in Halifax 90 minutes away, that we're going to move to a larger population centre to take advantage of more GF opportunities.

La Messagère is available in Canada. You may be able to find it near you. I do not drink, so I cannot vouch for the taste.

Here are some other ideas: http://www.penny.ca/Novascotia.htm

Even two years later your fish looks so good, Al! I used to live in Minnesota and I miss those Friday fish fries.

I didn't realize there were other GF beers out there. I have been drinking Redbridge and it's okay, but I'm going to look for the others so I can see what I like best.
