I've been G/F since 1/27/05. I've not posted much on this site, but I do a lot of reading on it. I also subscribe to the Scott Free Newsletter and have all the back issues, read magazine articles and generally have followed all of Al's links. I like to think I've become very educated.

My home is totally G/F. Family and friends are very supportive and if they are cooking, they call and ask what is safe for me. If I do go out to eat, I carry my unsafe food list with me and have the waitress check the contents of the food I want and generally that means a huge tip and I've been very successful in eating out. I have found that I am also lactoce intolerant so I drink only Lactaid milk.

But somehow, every month or so I still get sick. I can feel it coming on with all of the flu like symptoms and then the Big D hits and doesn't stop and I'm down for the count for a week. Last night I told my husband I was discouraged, depressed, upset, wanting to curl up and die, you name it, the emotions were all there and I was in tears. The pain that comes out of nowhere in my lower back and legs is just unbearable. And since I think this disease played a large part in my Mom's death, I'm a little desperate.

My GP tells me to take Immodium for the Big D and Clarinex to stop the allergic reaction which does help, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Anyone have any ideas?

Please share if you do, I'm getting desperate and tired of being stuck in the house. Crying or Very sad

Hey Janet,
I am with you, been trying to go GF for almost a year. I am not full blown CD, but WI (Wheat Intolerant) and also lactose intolerant. But the same thing happens to me, I really have been following the links, and getting lots of Ideas from Al, and others on the forum. Then "Boom" Like you said, you present again with symptoms, mine is GERD (Acid Reflux) stuff. Man, it gets frustrating. I try to back track and see if it's something I did, or ate, or was around etc. that triggered a reaction. I though of going back to just eating foods I know don't bother me. But that is frustrating. But stuff I have been reading on the forum. Like, you get more sensitive to gluten once you have been off it for awhile, or you can develop another allergy to a food that you thought you were safe with, ex, rice, corn, and of course that would suck. that's supposedly what we can eat, they take that away what to we do. Or, should we do food rotation, so we don't get to sensitive to certain foods, or do we do food combining like, don't mix carbs with fruit, or don't mix carbs with meats, the list goes on and on. All I can think of to do is to ride it out and hopefully get back to balance again, and enjoy the times when we are healthy (Without Gerd) or in your case the Big "D". But again your right, it is frustrating, especially when we are getting more knowledgeable about what to do with the help of everybody on the forum.
Thanks
TJ

The washing hands is a very good reason for the reactons and I have not thought about that. I wash my hands at home all the time after i fix something for the kids that contain gluten. May I also suggest that you check the igredients in your soaps , shampoo, lotions, make up toothpaste etc. I didn't realize about all that when i first started this diet until someone pointed it out to me and sure enough my shampoo had wheat in it. No wonder I wasn't feeling any better at times.

Hey all,

I'm new to this site and am already learning so much! I was diagnosed with CD about 2 weeks ago. I have experimented with a wheat-free diet and went GF after my diagnosis. I was doing great with the GF diet until I had to eat wheat again for the blood test and now I am not doing so well. I have had severe stomach cramping, nausea, headaches, and have been exhausted for the past 4 days. My only guess is that I ate something that was not GF. How long does it typically take for a case like this to work it's way out of your system?

Confused Jen

Hi Jen,

So, you are doing the gluten challenge, eh? I wish you well with it. I had to call mine off - I decided it wasn't worth the suffering - I had had enough! I really wanted to go thru with it. I wanted that piece of paper that said "I can't have gluten". I wanted it for myself and more so, I wanted it to prove to docs that this wasn't in my head! Finally I just decided to "screw the docs" and listen to my body. I have not looked back since. Deciding to do the GC is such a personal decision - you are the only that can make that choice.

Everyone is different in recovery time. For some it's hours/days...for others it's a week or more.

Good luck with your GC!! Keep us updated on your progress
