I am really trying to be gluten free. My stomach pains have stopped my headaches have stopped, But my sinuses are plugged up and full of mucous. I have been prone all my life to sinus infections. How do I know if it is gluten or sinus problems. Having this sinus problem is freaking me out because I can't imagine where else I am getting gluten from. I hate being afraid of everything I eat when I know I am doing it right. |

Sorry you're having sinus troubles Fifi.
1. It could be that you're just prone to sinus infections. I have friends like that.
2. It could be hidden gluten. What have you been eating lately? Have you been checking with the manufacturer to make sure it's GF?
3. You could be allergic/intolerant to some other food. Have you tried keeping a food journal? Make sure you note how you felt after you eat. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

| Thanks for the advice I will start a journal. But how do you stop being afraid that everytime you have a symptom that you've eaten something wrong? evertime I get sick now I feel like I am going to be assuming it is gluten's fault. For example this could very well be a sinus infection, but because I am blaming gluten, I am not getting it looked at by a Dr. And that MSG is in everything!! I made homemade soup last night all fresh vegetables, beef and soup bones, some herbs salt and pepper and beef soup base with no gluten. and corn/rice pasta GF. I know it's only been 1 month so far, but I am a control freak and I feel like I am not in control anymore. |

Hi Fifi,
Dairy has been known to cause sinus issues in many. Keeping a food journal is a good place to start. Just be aware that delayed food reactions [which you probably experiencing], can take hours or days before you will notice a reaction. Keep this in mind when reviewing your journals.
It takes awhile for you get everything all sorted out. Many times it's just not gluten that causes your body problems. Once the biggest offender has been removed [usually gluten], you may start to see others become more prevalent.
People often do tend to blame every ache, pain and ill on gluten. Truth is...it's not always gluten. This is why it's important to strip your diet back to the basics, stop dining out, etc. This allows you to get a handle on things, to know how you feel. It may take you a good 3-6 months before you are on a even keel.
If you feel it's a sinus infection - go to the doc and get it checked out. Hope you feel better!
Keep at it! _________________ Al

Fifi,
I thought on another entry you said you might suspect dairy being an issue. I would try cutting out dairy for a few weeks and see if your sinus problem resolves itself. I understand the eating frustration, I am still trying to cut out the gluten. I think I am am doing good at it but I don't beat myself up if I find gluten in something I have eaten. I have been taking it one step at a time otherwise I couldn't function. I was tested for allergies and basically I am allergic to everything. Cutting out all foods at once was very hard but I had started a diet at the time so it was easier. I have to eat everything rice based and gluten free. It is not as terrible as I thought but I am worrying about the rice milk... I have had it in the fridge for a week and I am afraid to taste it because I know it is my only option for milk. I can't have soy or almond due to allergies. Stay positive and good luck it has to get easier as we go. |

Thanks for all the help. It does get frustrating sometimes. I am doing better now. I am being more careful and eating naked foods for a while, eventually I will be able to add stuff, but I am in no hurry. I could never start eating gluten again for a test. They ordered pizza here at work last Friday and it was really hard to resist, but I did. I kept thinking how bad I would feel if I ate it and that was enough. One day I plan to make my own pizza dough so I can have an ooey gooey piece of gf pizza. Maybe eat the whole thing
I really believe I am lactose intolerant, so I am cutting out dairy for a while to be sure. |

Ten days after I went GF I had doctor's appointment. He decided to do the Celiac Panel blood test, because I was diagnosed based an biobsy results and he never did this type of blood work. I thought that if I am on GF diet, my blood test will be negative. Well, I just got a phone call from them saying it confirmed the biopsy results. Am I doing it wrong?
I am silent celiac, I am really careful about my food...however, my body does not give me any feedback if I eat some gluten. You guys said that it takes some time for the body to get back to normal...does it refer to the blood test results, too?
Also, is it really possible that some stuff that I could eat before can start causing some problems? My suspect is Coca Cola Zero... |

Kat,
It can take months for the blood work to normalize. Sometimes docs will do followup blood work at 6 months - then again 12 months. When things settle down, docs will [should] run tests to check for compliance annually.
How long have you been GF [forgive my memory]?
Since this is the 1st blood work you've had for CD, this might be your starting point/baseline for the next test.
Our Thread on Univ of Chicago CD Center - Followup Testing - What & how often you should be tested after going GF. _________________ Al

I had recurring sinus infections for years, and eventually my doctor organised a CT scan to see what was going on. It turned out that one of the small bones right inside my nasal passage was all crooked, and was blocking proper drainage of fluid, hence the recurring infections.
I had surgery last January (it was very simple day-surgery) to fix the problem, and have not had any sinus problems since. |
