Endometriosis and Celiac Disease

Hi,

I'm not sure this is the right place for this posting, but does anyone out there have endometriosis and celiac disease? I was recently diagnosed with both and I'm having a hard time differentiating between the symptoms. I get very nauseous, have stomach pain, cramping, headaches, and get lethargic at various points during the month. It's hard having both because I'm not sure if I am eating something that is not GF, or whether it should be contributed to endometriosis. Anyone out there with similar symptoms?

There's a good chance I have endo, but don't know for sure. I was diagnosed with celiac shortly after we started investigating the endo and then that stuff got put on hold to figure out the celiac thing. I still should go have that scope thing done to see either way. I know its minor outpatient surgery which doesn't bother me all that much.. I just seem to keep putting it off!!

Hi Wendy,

I recently had the laparoscopy you talked about. I was having terrible cramps each month and nausea. It all happened about the same time as celiac disease, so I am not sure which symptoms go with which.

Jen.. can I ask you how the laproscopy went? Is there anything I should ask (in general) and keep in mind? I've done a bunch of research and stuff.. but its not the same as hearing it from someone whos been through it. (And I get the terrible cramp thing.. they're almost debilitating!)

Hi Wendy,

I had a laparoscopy done this past May for a cyst that became enlarged. While I had the surgery, my gyn discovered endometriosis. He suspected that I might have it due to my painful periods, and it turns out I did. My cyst was drained and my endometriosis was cauterized (sp?). My gyn suggested I go on Lupron to help the symptoms, but would put my body into menopause for a few months. He also mentioned that the side effects can be difficult. I opted not to try the Lupron and see how I feel first. I go through enough pain with celiac disease.

I read on a different forum last night that there may be a link between celiac disease and endometriosis because they are both considered auto-immune disorders. At least that's what one of the users mentioned. I wonder if there is a link?

DR. RUDERT: Celiac Disease can certainly be associated with a wide variety of gynecologic disorders. I am unaware of any studies that have studied Celiac patients and the frequency of endometriosis. I am following Celiacs that have endometriosis, infertility, pelvic pain and also some with chronic yeast infections. Whether or not these are coexisting problems are unknown. Infertility and pelvic pain have both been described in some Celiac patients.

I have not been able to find much (if anything) on endo & celiac studies either.

Yes--I have both. After a long 2 years of being extremely sick all the time I was diagnosed with IBS and then because my symptoms did not cease and to rule out endometriosis I had a laparoscopy which uncovered severe pelvic congestion. Basically, pelvic congestion and endo. are the same thing so now I take seasonale to lessen my periods and the pain of them. Because I still did not get better they finally ran the blood work and endoscopy which showed celiac's disease.
I don't know if there is a link between the two, I take one day at a time.

I have (or had) both PCOS and endometriosis (stage 4) and needed a laparoscopy to remove 2 baseball-sized endometriomas from my ovaries. Since going GF however, I haven't had any problems at all! Both conditions have disappeared.

Also, it took over 6 years to conceive my first son. I didn't know I had celiac back then. When he was almost 2, I realized I had celiac (he does too) and went GF. A few months later, my husband convinced me to try to conceive again. I agreed thinking it would be a while if we even could, and believe it or not - we conceived on the first try. I had a much easier pregnancy and he is much healthier than my first. (He also may have CD but we are not sure yet since he's only 7 months.)

I had the same horrible experience and symptoms along with anemia and my doctor finally insisted that I have a hysterectomy. She insisted that the anemia would go away after the surgery. They discovered I had endrometeosis during surgery and guess what? I still had anemia off and on years after the surgery. That would be amazing if celiac was found to have a corelation with endrometreosis. If not what coinicidence huh?

Since this was bumped, I decided to give my 2 cents worth (You want that in Euros or US currency? )

I have endo. NOT fun. Found out about CD long after (Due to Mom and sister going on the diet first.. me being reluctant though I had all the symptoms)...


I have been GF about a year, with some slip ups inbetween that have not been fun (Like last month and the month prior!)..

I have noticed things are a bit "easier", and since being glutened, things went back to "harder" like before...

And I am PMSing like a madwoman. . . almost incontrollable this month and last. Crazy stuff! And its really uncontrollable on my side. One minute I'm fine, and the next I could get really really mad and you wouldn't want to be near me.


GF has helped LOADS though! It's just me being stupid (memory lapse or being convinced by inlaws/DH that we can talk to someone and make it all OK in an environment that is not 100%GF) and eating out from time to time that has hosed it.
