i've been trying to stay gluten free 4 about a month since i was diagnosed...but so far i've been foiled by cross-contamination or hidden gluten almost everyday...the days that i've been truly gluten free (and a few days with minimal cross-contamination) i felt light-headed & weak cuz all i could eat was fruits veggies meat rice nuts & potatoes (sounds like a lot but it never ends up being enough somehow.) does anybody know of a way to avoid cross-contamination or some gf dietary supplement (oh btw i lost the 10 extra pounds that i never had too) i could use any advice from u experienced gf veterans! please! _________________ the greatest beauty comes from ashes

Hi Horselvr,
Welcome to the board!
Sorry to hear you're having a tough time of this. It's note the easiest thing in the word to do, but after some tips and tricks, I suspect you'll get the hang of it.
Let's start with some basics...
Is your house 100% GF [or do you live in a mixed house like me. I'm GF, my wife is not].
How do you determine the GF status of your food?
Do you eat out and how often?
Knowing a bit more about you will help us help you! _________________ Al

my house is mixed gf and non-gf so that may be part of the problem
im too scared to eat out at all...i really dont like getting sick
i do have separate cupoards for gf and non-gf foods and wash the dished separately(dont know if that helps) but something is still going on
i read the ingredients and check for any of the really long list of things that i cant have
i also just found out im lactose intolerant and allergic to tree nuts, i dont know if lactose and tree nuts cross contaminate...
thnx! ill check that boot camp thing out! _________________ the greatest beauty comes from ashes

Hi and welcome to the forum.
If you are buying products that say that nuts are in the same facility as the product that you are purchasing, that very well could be where you are getting some of you problems from.
You live in the mixed household:
are you using the same toaster?
the same wooden spoons?
cutting board?
cast iron or a scratched teflon pan?
Maybe the collander or the pot that you boil gluten in is contaminating the pans.
Have you thought about cooking totally GF at home and only having cereal and sandwhic breads that contain gluten and confining it to a certain area of the kitchen?
Make sure that no one uses out of you condiment jars or your jelly or the butter. Those little crumbs that they put back in the jars can really hurt your system.
Even though you are not getting it 1ßß% correctly at this point, please do not dispare. It takes time to cut it out of the foods and then a little longer to get the hang of the hidden stuff. _________________

i use different collanders wooden spoons and cutting boards
we separate gf and nongf foods (different cupboards)
i havent been using codements at all really i just eat all natural stuff mostly just to be safe (fruits, veggies, meat, eggs, rice, etc...) all my meals are home-cooked
thanx! i just hope i figure it out soon! _________________ the greatest beauty comes from ashes

YES! Nuts and lactose cross contaminate just as gluten does. You may feel better once you are sure you aren't being exposed to these things.
You may have other intolerances as well - not to scare you, but they can become evident at any time. _________________ Nance
