I was at an Outback on Sunday and looked at their Birthday Specials, so I sent off an email to the mothership to find if their GF.

Here's their response...

Gday,

Thank you for your email!

The Char Grill Tuscan Ribeye is not gluten free.

The Sirloin with rice, green beans, and shrimp and scallop platter is not gf.

Order the Roasted Sirloin- Tomato Vinaigrette without the jumbo crouton.

Well, the one thing about dining out GF is that you don't have to sit there for an hour wracked with indecision about what to eat.... Laughing

Thanks for the info Al! One out of three isn't bad.

Meh, I'm not going to complain, given the size of their normal GF menu. Smile They can have a short-term menu that only has 1 GF option and I'll forgive them.

Thanks for the heads-up, Al - that does sound pretty tasty.

I really wasn't complaining about the number of choices on the special menu, and I'm always grateful when a restaurant has GF selections. I just find it funny, because I was always the one who took forever making a decision about what to order, while my DH patiently waited. Now the situation is reversed..... Oh well, I guess I owe him! A couple of notes about this:

1. The waitress tried to push the Bloomin' Onion Burger on me. I think she was confused why I wouldn't want deep fried onion peels on top of my already-ordered burger.

2. I also had the following conversation with the waitress. Something to keep in mind next time you're there:

Me: I'll have a burger please.
Her: Why are you ordering off a paper menu? OH, is that the gluten-free menu?
Me: Yeah.
Her: Ohhhhhh! OK, that helps alot. Thanks for letting me know.
Me: Why? Is there a problem?
Her: I didn't know you were gluten free. Your burger would've been cooked on the same grill as the rest of the food. Now that I know, your burger will be cooked on a separate grill.

My husband and I used to eat at the Outback all the time. But, with the new menu, they've taken 1000 island dressing off. We're very bummed out and keep trying to order it on our salads. (We blocked it out after the first time, we were so disappointed...) Not that that will keep us away, we just won't go there as often.

The ones that are close to us are pretty good. I went to one in West Virginia once while on travel - trying to play it safe. I asked the waitress for a Gluten Free menu and got the deer in headlights look. After a couple of beats, she went back into the kitchen and returned about 10 minutes later with a freshly printed menu. They weren't trained about GF and just pulled the croutons off the salad. Needless to say, I was a very sick girl that night in the hotel. Luckily, it passed before my meeting the next day.

What new menu? Did you happen to see a date code on the bottom of it? I get the 1K Island dressing...

The one dated 02/08 on the net still states all their dressings are GF except for Mustard Vin and Bleu Cheese.

I think I need to email Outback and get varification. I've got a trip there coming up next week...

Al - Outback doesn't have 1000 island dressing anymore - period. I don't know why they changed this. Maybe it's just the local one or the ones in New England that stopped carrying it. Either way, my DH and I were really bummed out. The regular menu on their web site is dated 6/08, but doesn't list dressings specifically. Maybe they are eliminating it in some markets. WI is an awful long way to drive for 1000 island dressing. Maybe they have it in Roswell GA. (Since we're all taking a road trip anyway...We'd better make sure it's an RV or isto and I will have to make a LOT of pit stops! Wink)

We'll make sure the bus has a potty. And...I've delivered babies too! You get one stop shopping with me on board. I'll be sure to pack a couple of OB kits!

Ahhh I see now. It's not that they removed it from being GF - it's gone completely in your area. Yeah, that sux!

They still have it here - at least the last time we were there - about 2-3 weeks ago.

You could do what I do and take your own dressing... we're egg free too, and I can't stand most vinegrette style dressings, so I take my own homemade buttermilk dressing.

That's not a bad idea - we could bring a bottle of Kraft 1000 island and order the salads dry. I will have to suggest that to hubby next time we go. Smile

I was gonna say, DH had 1000 island dressing on Friday night. I think it's just a "your area" thing. Sad Second the suggestion about bringing your own.

I used to bring my own dressing at first. Now, I'm too lazy - I'll just eat it plain or ask for a wedge of lemon.
