Definitions of Terms, and Abbreviations for Terms

I've been thinking about doing this post for a while, and a slight confusion on the board today made me decide to do it to make things easier for new comers. I think a glossary of the abbreviations we use for terms would be helpful. If anyone else wants to add to it jump in. I can copy and alphabetize from your posts, so that we keep all the stuff in some sort of reasonable order. Thus people will only have to check out the top of the post to find what they are looking for.

The language of GF-dom, and a few medical terms thrown in too. Also some of the commonly used computer-ese for the people who are just getting into the terms, etc.

The following abbreviations and definitions are not necessarily in general use, or exhaustive in nature. They are simply intended for a person to be able to learn what we are talking about on the board. Any specific questions or concerns should always be directed to your doctor.

ASD - Autism spectrum disorder

Big D = our pet name for diarrhea

BRM = Bob's Red Mill, a company that makes many of the gluten-free flours available

BM = bowel movement

BRF = brown rice flour

Bump = this just means a thread is being moved to the top of the section to make it easily accessible for somone who needs the info.

BTW = by the way

CF = casein free

CD = celiac disease

CC = cross contamination, when gluten gets on or into food that would otherwise be gluten free.

DD = dear daughter

DF = dairy free

DH = dear husband

DH = dermatitis herpetiformis a skin condition that is basically a skin manifestation of celiac disease

DS = dear son

dx = diagnosis

EF = egg-free

EGD = esophagogastroduodenoscopy (say that five times fast) a procedure that is used to diagnose celiac disease and other diseases by putting a tube down a patien't throat and taking samples (biopsies) from the gastro intestinal tract, specifically the small intestine for celiac disease.

FP = fudge puddles, see here

GF = Gluten Free

GIG = gluten intolerance group

GI = gastro enterologist a doctor specializing in disorders of the digestive tract. The doctor who does the biopsies of the small intestine to diagnose celiac disease.

GI = also used for gluten intolerance

GS = gluten sensitivity

HFS - health Food Store

HFCS - high fructose corn syrup

hx = history, as in patient's medical hx

hyperlink = if you see a portion of text shaded in light blue, move your cursor over the text and click. It will take you to another site, or thread on this site. Depending on the subject of the thread, if you click on any of Al's hyperlinks they could take you almost anywhere. Laughing

IMO or IMHO = in my opinion, or in my humble opinion

LF = lactose free

LI - lactose intolerant

Miss NGF = Al's affectionate title for his wife, the lovely Peg

NCGS = non-celiac gluten sensitivity

NGF = non-gluten free

OA = osteo arthritis

OT = occupational therapy

Paleo - Paloelithic diet

PPM = parts per million

PBC = peanut butter cookies

PT = physical therapy

potato flour = a heavy flour made from the whole potato. Used very sparingly when used in gluten-free baking.

potato starch = a starch from the potato used in gluten-free baking sometimes also called potato starch flour, not to be confused with potato flour

refractory sprue = celiac disease that does not respond to strict adherence to a gluten-free diet. **

RA = rheumatoid arthritis

rx = prescription

s/s = signs and symptoms

6-2-1 = A GF flour blend consisting of 6 parts brown or white rice flour, 2 parts potato starch, and 1 part tapioca starch

SIBO - small intestinal bacterial overgrowth

SCD - Specific Carbohydrate diet

SBR = Al's term for Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce

sx = symptoms

TJ's - Trader Joe's

tx = treatment

Wendy Wark = another flour blend (my personal favorite.)

WRF = white rice flour

WF - Whole Foods, sometimes nicknamed Whole Paycheck.

AGA IgG - Antigliadin IgG
AGA IgA - Antigliadin IgA
tTG - Anti-tissue Transglutaminase Antibody (tTG) IgA
EMA - Anti-endomysial (EMA) *Please note that the above four hyperlinks will take you to the same place.

RX = prescription
CC = Cross Contamination. Used to describe when gluten free food comes in contact with non gluten free food.
