Hi

I've been on a gluten free diet for a while now and feel really good. My energy levels feel increased except when I exercise. I used to eat two big slices of toast for breakfast before going for a run (about 10 miles), but now feel I am using all my energy up quicker and I need a boost.

I eat gluten free cereals and fruit but feel I need that extra boost I used to get from breads and pasta when I'm training. Is there any other runners or people into their fitness that can suggest some high energy foods when exercising hard?

Thanks in advance.

Hi SC --

10 miles?! That's awesome! I'm planning on running the Cherry Blossom run in DC in April, which is 10 miles. The longest I've ever run is like 8 miles, so I'm pretty nervous! But it's still far away....

Anyway, I would suggest Van's gluten free waffles and maybe some peanut butter. The waffles are really good and pretty filling. As for gluten free bread, I really like the Food For Life Millet bread. I buy it at Whole Foods, but I'm guessing other stores sell it. Also, you could try cooking some buckwheat. It's pretty good...I just make it with water but you could add milk or a milk substitute. I add honey and almonds. It sticks to you, just like oatmeal. You could even buy GF oats and make oatmeal. I hope this helps!

I bring Sport Beans with me when I run. They are made by Jelly Belly. They were my staple prior to GF and I was thrilled (and relieved) to find out there were GF when I made the switch. Actually they come in really small packs that I carry them around all over in case I get hungry. They are about 100 calories, and also contain some electrolytes for exercise. Just a thought if you want something portable too.
