Everyone is different but on average it can take between 6 months to 2 years depending on the amount of damage that was done. Children will heal faster than adults. _________________ Lacey |

Children will heal faster than adults. | Ihave been diagnosed as having a mild case of celiac sprue and after one week on gluten free diet diarrhea continues as well as severe numbness in toes/feet, finger/hands and face. Is this normal reaction and if so how long can I expect to experience these symptoms? I was deficient in vitamin B12 but have had my B12 elevated to high levels for one month but the numbness continues. Has anybody experience this symptom or is there something other villan at work. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Bob,
Welcome to the board!
Yes the numbness/tingling/pain can be Peripheral Neuropathy (PN) could be caused by CD or Gluten Intolerance. Your B12 deficiency may also be caused by CD too.
You need to continue with your B12 supplement. If you take oral supps, you might consider getting sublingual Methylcobalamin. The reason you want sublingual is due to possible malabsorbtion issue you might still have. The methyl version is more easily metabolized by your body. If you can't find the methyl, the cyanocobalamin can be used. A B-complex would also be in order. All the B's work together.
The numbness may continue for sometime (possibly forever). Nerves do heal, but they do so very slowly - and in the right conditions.
I have PN. Eventhough I am GF, it still is progressing. I have been experimenting with removing dairy from the diet due to neurological implications of casein (the protein in milk).
