So if you are in a disaster like a hurricane...(anyone wondering
this?) What do you eat? The emergency rations the rescue crew is going
to provide are all going to contain wheat. Celiacs are not going to be
able to eat most of what is being served at the Astrodome, right? If
there are 150,000 people being housed in emergency shelters, how many
of them are Celiacs?
What would you keep in your emergency supply kit in case of a
catastrophy? My list of food:
1. water (of course)
2. peanut butter
3. rice cakes (not very filling but keeps well and scoops up peanut
butter...)
4. raisins/dried fruit
5. Ensure/carnation instant/protein drink
What else? |

You've got a great start, but I would add several packages of those boil in bag entrees. One brand is Tasty Bites. They are good eaten at room temp or hot. I would probably add some Gatorade, a bag of brown rice, crackers, a large hand full of meal replacement bars, canned beans, tuna and GORP. As well as a pan with a lid, a cooking spoon, a can opener, a couple forks, spoons and knives & wet wipes. A wad of cash (only because I never have cash on me), 30 day worth of prescriptions, a gas card, a telephone card and important papers--copies of birth certificates, SScard, medical info, etc and maybe I would be okay for a week or two. I plan to place my emergency pack in a cooler, or two.
Can you tell I've been thinking about this?

Try a meal replacement powder.
GNC makes a product call Mega MRP that is primarily a high protein supplement for body building but has high % of essential vitamins and minerals, mixes with water and comes in a variety of flavors. Each packet is about 300 calories.
I've used it when i'm driving cross country and find it hard to plan meals or find GF food on the road. Keep several packets in my emergency kit. If i get evac'd there's no guarantee of GF food, but i can carry a weeks worth in a couple ziplocks.
Remember for survival you want concentrated calories and nutrients. Most Red Cross disaster bags have high calorie food bars that are like 500 calories each. They recomend 2-3 per person per day.
More important is water. In any disaster fresh water is the first thing to go and the average person needs about 2 gallons per person per day. |

Good ideas.
I am 3 blocks from the Astrodome. It's crazy out here. I had to go to MD andderson cancer hospital and people are all over the streets You can go into other towns in the burbs (SugarLand,Stafford)and find people needing medicine that they can't afford because it is too soon to refill and people with children trying tof ind ways to feed them and keep them healthy and you know they are so poor not only from this disaster but from pure poverty some of them. They are wearing green wrist bands to get back into theAstrodome .Looting is bad.My father who is a physician, says the hospitals are closing early because of crack heads wanting drugs to feel better.. Anyway,we are taking care of these people and will continue to do so and as far as celiac, the Houstonchapter is putting somethingtogether to help anyone, as far as I know. I'm praying always for these people who have lost so much. Pray for them all, please.... _________________ Nikki from Texas |

Emergency Preparedness for Celiacs
I stumbled across this. It had to do with Y2K prep...but I thought many things might be applicable here.
