I didn't know it was going to be like this!
I know they are supposed to be GF, but on Friday I had a M&M Mcflurry at McDonalds and got sick afterward. I felt like I was going to throw up and had to leave work. The rest of my family had been sick that week so I thought I had the same thing. I threw up most of it and had a little diarrhea and then felt better. (The family sickness lasted 2 days.)
Well yesterday I had another one, because they are supposed to be GF and I felt really sick again last night. I felt like I could throw up again but didn't - I wish I did because today I am seriously sick! Bad diarrhea and sick to the stomach. I woke up in the middle of the night with really bad bone pain in my arms and hands too. I never had these kinds of symptoms before going GF and I have only been GF for 3 weeks!
So I assume it was the McDonalds. I don't think it could have been anything else and it happened the same way the last time I had their food. I did't tell them to be careful not to cross contaminate because I have celiac - because techincally I don't and I guess I'm still kind of afraid people will think I'm crazy.
Oh well. I have felt a little sick off and on these past few weeks as well, probably because I haven't been to careful with washing my hands or counters after touching my husbands gluten food.
Also I find that this diet is very constipating. (Not today though.) Do you have any remedies for that? Maybe more salads?
Sorry if this post was disgusting,
Joann |

1. Do not eat at McDonald's. Your body needs real, whole foods, and the contamination factor there is huge.
2. Eating salad will help with C. More fiber in general is a good thing. Fruits, veggies, seeds.
3. McFlurries do not belong to any of the food groups listed in #2.
Yes, you might have a stomach bug, or you may have been glutened. _________________ Nance

Is there any milk in their milkshakes? It could also be a reaction to lactose/casein.
You know what they say: if it hurts when you do that, then don't do that.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I prefer to go with the philosophy that there is NO SUCH PLACE as McDonald's.......Never eat there again.....my new life doesn't have room for that in it. A carrot stick and a rice cake has saved me from the husband's groan........"Let's just stop at MickeyD's!"...
So when he decided to sojourn to the red and yellow on his own, and came home sicker then a dog.........I TRIED really hard not to laugh....and he doesn't even have any food issues.
Just say NO....to Mc'D's!!!! |

Thanks everybody. Before the diet I would never eat at McDonalds at all. If I was out and about, like I was yesterday, I would go to a sub shop and have a veggie sandwich. I could still get a salad at subway, I suppose, but I haven't found a GF dressing I like yet. I was eating pretty healthfully before - now it seems like I'm living off of cheese, meat and sweets and always feeling queasy. I don't like to eat vegetables unless it is convenient. I guess I'll have to change that. It seems this diet is not very convenient from what I've experienced so far.
I'm feeling a little better now. I had beans and rice for lunch and I don't feel like eating much else right now.
Thanks for the fiber suggestions too.

I don't mean to get you down with this, but I would be very leery of eating at Subway due to bread crumbs being EVERYWHERE. I thought about eating there, but I figured the only safe way to do it would be to ask them to open new packages of everything and wash their hands, the counters, and wear new gloves. Somehow I think that's a bit much to ask of a "fast-food" restaurant. I would love to be able to run in there for a salad though. |

PLease be careful in the kitchen when others have gluten there. Be sure that surfaces are clean and that you wash your hands obsessively. _________________ Nance

I agree- be very careful of ingredients that are open- like at Subway. It's the same thing with buffets- you have no idea who has contaminated what. _________________ Rachel |

I won't eat at Subway, either. It's hard, because it is a favorite place for my family to eat. But, as someone else mentioned, if you watch while they make sandwiches, crumbs fall off the paper into the lettuce and other veggie containers. They handle the bread, then stick their hands right into any container. So even getting a salad there is not safe. My husband thinks this is really inconvenient, but I just can't bring myself to do it. _________________ Jen

| I reread your original post and you said you had nausea, vomiting and diarrhea after eating the McFlurry. That is exactly what would happen to me if I had dairy (especially that much). I would be in the bathroom for hours if I messed up with dairy. I used to have Mcflurry's before I changed my diet, but I had to take 1-2 lactaid because I wasn't sure if it had dairy in it, and the one time I asked, the employee didn't know either. I would assume it's GF, but I don't do any sorts of fast food restaurants anymore because it's too big of a risk no matter what I eat, so I've never checked. |

Regarding Subway, in another forum someone posted that their child's class was having Subway sandwiches as a reward for something or other. The mom called Subway with her concerns and was assured that all due precautions would be taken with the child's salad.
Someone else posted they used to work at Subway and that employees are told to say that whenever someone calls with food concerns. However they are also told to just make the food and don't bother with all the extra steps because they are too much trouble.
Cross Subway off your list permanently. _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

When we have stopped at Subway with the family...I usually just get Ina a bottle of water and a bag of chips.....and then add a Larabar that I keep in my purse....try keeping things in your purse or car at all times...little pkgs of nuts, larabars, small bags of chips, a little baggie of raw veggies etc... and remember that where there is a fast food restaurant there is usually a grocery store nearby....go into the grocery store instead of the fast food restaurant and get you something totally safe....fresh fruit, tuna now comes in those nice little pkgs, if no dairy issues then cheese sticks, yogurt, if you need icecream then buy a pint of icecream...chips and dip.... your possibilities are endless.....when you are new to being GF, you just have to learn how to do things a little differently, but eventually it will seem like second nature.....I hope you get to feeling better soon _________________ Connie, mom to Ina, 14 y/o with CD |

| I think I read here on this forum that McFlurries are not safe since they use the same mixer machine for all their flurries...one after another. So an M&M flurry could be made right after a cookie flurry...kwim? |
