Hi all,
It’s been quite a while since I’ve joined in, so I’ll try and catch you all up…
I lost my job about 15months ago. It was quite a blow. I did find another job, and have been there just barely a year. However, I really don’t like it at all. I hate to complain, with the economy the way it is – two people from my current employer have just been laid off. I keep looking, but so far have not found anything else.
My family is all doing well, so that is a very big positive. My celiac daughter is a senior in high school. Wow! We are searching for colleges for next year. My second daughter just turned 16… very scary as she is my racing fan – and drives like it! My youngest is 9, and is at such a fun age… she still loves doing things with her parents.
At my old job, I had an hour lunch and would check in with the forums during my lunch break. At my current job, we are not allowed to do anything personal on the computer. It is very hard to get a turn on the home computer with three kids wanting a turn as well.
Our holidays were lots of fun. We took the plunge and got a wii for the family. We’ve had lots of fun playing it – however buying games for such and age range can be challenging. The guy at Game Stop made fun of me when I was buying games as they ranged from Barbie Horse Adventures to Left 4 Dead. Wink
Well, that’s all for now. I think I’m going to have to start getting up earlier in the mornings in order to find time to check in… I’ve missed you guys!

hi all, hope eveyone had a good holiday. To ensure the g/f status of our holiday dinner, I made the the whole thing, only had to feed 12 people though. I find I am having issues with other foods now, it started in October. All of a sudden corn, rice, soy, and dairy were causing breathing difficulties, and had my face and chest turning all red. I'm seeing an allergist for this and waiting for the labs to come back. Guess then I'll find out what foods I can eat for sure

The fun never ends, huh? I ended up w/ problems with these foods as well. I hope you can work through the sensitivities and they are not true allergies.

Fun huh? For me the hardest part right now, is figuring out what I can eat.

So we spent two weeks in NC and a week in DC over the holidays. I didn't get sick once! Very Happy Never did get to eat any NC BBQ though it sure did smell divine! We flew back on Jan 1st and got stuck in Chicago with our connecting flight. Bleh - it took forever to get home.

Two days later my little kiddlet came down with death flu (vomiting, fever and the big D)... we wound up taking her to the ER to get her fever down when it got up to 104* and she wasn't moving (much anymore). They also used an IV to rehydrate her... poor little thing. That's a lot for a 3yo. They admitted her overnight for observation and continued rehydration. Turned out she caught a bad case of Rotavirus. The timing works out that she probably picked it up in the airport bathroom. Ick! We were so careful not to touch anything and wash, wash, wash too! Guess you can never be too careful. Confused

Otherwise Jan is cold and we've been snuggled up a lot. I'm just waiting for it to finally thaw out. I miss going outside! I've upped my vitamin D intake to keep from getting too cranky. Otherwise not much to report! Oh! I accidentally ate almonds and had zero reaction! Woot! (I think I got lucky!) Still working on the rotation diet and trying to get other foods back in... I still really, really do miss eggs. Neutral

I'm so sorry to hear your child caught Rotavirus. The only good thing about that illness is that it typically passes very quickly ( In relative terms). I'm actually amazed you didn't catch it considering how incredibly contagious it is. I know it was definitely my most memorable illness though the whole period of time is kind of fuzzy because I was so weak. That is definitely a lot to go through for a 3yo. I hope they're doing well now because I know it takes a while to recuperate.

I has kitteh!

Got the boyfriend's cat over Christmas and my car (no pics yet, but it's just a white '94 caprice). Trying to spend more time in the lab, so I won't be on here much. Need to make up for all the time I was sick and get some experiments going.

Even though I'm getting paid again, going to keep the coupon hobby going. Paying 50 cents a box for Trix is nice. I'm going to see how little I can spend in 2009.

Lauren - my boys got so excited when they saw the picture of your bf's cat. It looks EXACTLY like their favorite cat who disappeared in the fall. His name was Lippy (because of the soul patch) and they miss him like crazy. They thought this cat was Lippy. I had to explain and they were so disappointed. Even I am shocked at the resemblance. Hope kitty is well-behaved!

Definitely not Lippy, this one is a female. Monster is generally well behaved, the problem is that she was found in a ditch at a week old and bottle fed, so she thinks she's more human than cat. Always wants to do stuff with you and a huge attention ho. The good news is that she's doing well switching to the gluten free cat food and the feline pine. She doesn't like the cold and will run away if she's close to the door when you open it, so no worries about her escaping. Laughing

Hi all! I hope everyone had a great holiday season....I read some of you got glutened Sad but hopefully now everyone's back to their regular schedules and eating their normal foods.

I don't have much to report. I still feel good (minus my silly slip up a few weeks ago Rolling Eyes ) I feel kinda dumb. Oh well, I'm moving on! I'm still eating a little soy, which I'm desperately trying to shake my habit of!! I do think it causes some minor GI problems, but I just can't seem to stop eating my Van's GF waffles for breakfast. I don't eat soy besides that. I continue to get so much support from my family, friends, and especially my coworkers. They are just so great, everytime someone brings in food or people decide to eat out, they always take me into consideration. I never order out when they do (I just bring my own lunch, like I do everyday) but it's really nice that they even think of me. I don't ever want to expect people to think of me, but it sure is nice when they do!

My roommates, on the other hand, well sometimes I get a little annoyed with them. I try to remember that it's unreasonable to expect them to make special considerations for me or do things differently. They have this habit of telling me how good something they just ate was, or saying, "smell these bagels, they are sooooo good!" Ugh. They really are great people and supportive in every other way; I just think they forget a lot of times. They knew me before I went GF so maybe it's just not always on their mind. (My coworkers met me post-GF so that may be why they seem more considerate). I have decided that I'm gonig to live alone next year. This will be the first time ever, and I'm a little apprehensive, but also excited. I am planning on buying all new everything in regards to the kitchen (well that shouldn't be hard considering I have nothing!) I am going to dedicate everything I buy to staying GF. A new toaster, new pots, pans, silverware, cutting board, etc. I haven't been able to buy separate things because it's just too hard living with 2 other people. I don't trust that they will remember not to use my cutting board or toaster. And I don't want to buy new ones if I will be living on my own come the summer. I just try to be really careful with everything, but I know I get gluten from CC. I don't have celiac though, so I believe (and hope) that I'm not doing internal damage.

I am going to my first support group in a couple weeks...and I can't wait. It will be nice to be able to talk to others (in person) going through what we all are. Not that talking to you on the forum isn't nice! Very Happy I don't really know what to expect, but hopefully everyone will be as welcoming and friendly as you all are!!

Well, that's it from me....I guess I had more to report than I thought!

January has been a hard month for me so far. I have been getting glutened since christmas and just can't seem to knock it out of my system. The only thing I can think of is to just start eating plain again. I have to start from scratch again. I am starting that tomorrow. I have also been getting tired of my bread so I am looking throuh our recipes here for other choices. My bread I was making was good, but it was way too dense. My spirits are up, I am still employed as a temp but still employed. The guardianship of my mom should be complete next week. I am taking life one day at a time. I am tired of the snow. I am now on facebook. Keping my life interesting.

Fifi, you sound very discouraged, and I just wanted to remind you to try to keep your chin up. This too shall pass, and I'm sure you'll make it through just fine. I'm sure everyone else is pulling for you too. Very Happy

Van's GF waffles for breakfast

I KNOW the love of the GF waffles. Each and every time I go to the grocery store, I buy 2 boxes. I could literally eat them every day! I get teased for it, but MAN OH MAN are they good! Wink

I haven't checked in yet. Thus far 2009 has been a busy, kind of crazy year. One of my dear friend/neighbors Mom died very suddenly on January 4th, she had an aneyrism (sp?) and it was a violent way to go. Her poor husband. They are the nicest people I know. Beth volunteered a lot for our PTA even though it was her Grandchild at school. I just spent a morning with her in December running the Holiday shop at the school. My daughters class happened to be shopping during my time, so Beth took Haven around. They shopped, they giggled, they had a great time. Beth was an amazing woman! After that a dear boy in town lost his battle with Cancer. I didn't know him specifically, but the kids all did. Children dying of cancer....makes me just sit back and ask WHY???? I still send my prayers out to both families! Such shock, such sadness.

For my husband and I things have gone ok business - wise, but on January 12th, our employee had a major accident and totalled the truck that we own. I typically joke that my HUBBY owns it. Now I really wish neither of us did! Laughing Last week I spent almost every day speaking to police, insurance companies, wrecker and repair facilities. Anyway, it is completely totalled. An $80,000 piece of equipment. They couldn't even tow it, it had to be brought back in pieces! It was ice in Iowa that was to blame. But, amazingly enough, no one was injured, no one died...so even in this case, we are truly blessed. We are hoping the insurance company honors the value that Peterbilt gave us for the unit. We should know more tomorrow.

I don't mean to be all doom and gloom. We are all alive, healthy and have each other. So 2009 is not a bust! Our holidays were wonderful. I was not glutened in anyway and it was great having some days off.

I still need to post my picture of my secret santa gift. It was/is awesome!! I have to hide the bag from my daughter, she keeps wanting to steal it! Wink

Today is an amazing day in history. I love that my 10 year old is truly excited about it all! He was beaming this morning watching it all on TV. What an amazing day for Americans! HISTORICAL!

Hope to be around more often!

Monica
