I have been wondering about something and somehow this might not be the best forum area, but it was the most closely related to my question since it has to do with pregnancy. I know it might sound stupid and is embarrasing, but then I thought about all the people who are using cosmetics and body care products that are GF for possibility of ingestion and skin sensitivity. Now, is there a slight possibility that if your partner say drinks beer or other wheat drinks and food, and then you kiss and or have sex, wouldn´t all that go into his bloodstream (saliva & semen)? Therefore, you might not get pregnant or have unexplained celiac symptoms? If anyone knows anything or empathizes with my concern, please let me know. I think it is a valid and very possible one!!! Embarassed

Hi Iris,

No, this is not a stupid question! It's a very good question. As for kissing...yes, that could be a cross contamination issue. Many people that I know will not kiss their non-GF loved ones (if they've been eating non GF food), unless they've brushed their teeth. It's more a matter of gluten particles left on the surface - not an absorbtion issue.

Now...as for semen (or other fluids)...that's a good question. I've never really thought about it. WOW - I never considered GF sex Very Happy. It has been reported that gluten can pass thru a mother's milk...so, it may be possible. I'll do a bit more reseach and see what I come up with.

CD can cause fertility issues - which I know you are familiar with.

Interesting question indeed!!!

Dear Al,
Thanks for the link. It was very helpful and I'm glad to know I was not at all that off from my initial concerns. I surfed through other postings as well, that came in handy for explaining to nongluten people what is like to deal with CD every hour of every day. I really appreciate all your help.

I know I'm a little late in posting this reply...

According to my doctor, gluten is digested by your non-CD partner so he's not passing it to you through his semen. This is why CD patients can eat beef even though the cattle grazes on wheat all day. Its stomach is breaking it down for us.

The comment about kissing is accurate. My kids and my husband know not to kiss me if they just ate something with gluten. They usually put their hands over their mouths in fear and say, "I have gluten lips!"

Makeup and beauty products are an issue, too, if there's a possibility we're ingesting them. I've been in contact with Estee Lauder, Clinique, Prescriptives, Origins, etc and they have sent me a list of wheat/barley/malt ingredients in their cosmetics.

That's really interesting. And since it got bumped up, I'm going to reply. LOL!
...................................................................................
I guess I just am and always will be the odd ball.

When my husband had gluten, and didn't tell me (the one time he did this: the first time!) I fully believe it passed into his uhm....manly fluid.
I had severe itching in a uhm....delicate area.

That was ALMOST a year ago. Any time he has gotten "gluten lips", he gets no nothin' for about a week. I guess I'm just THAT hyper synsetive. Go figure.

But I mean- a bunch of people here have been drinking sodas. Sodas generally make me ill because of the low low low LOW percentage of cross contaminates that the government says it's safe- but I do get sick. ( and I got sick before the study came out- so it's not like it's in my head.)
So for most people maybe the .....manly fluids....wouldn't be a problem. But they are for me.

Good luck!

Hmmm....interesting. I used to get really itchy after relations with DH. I never knew why.

Strangely enough I never had that issue with any of my previous boyfriends...........

DH is gluten sensitive though. Maybe that has something to do with it????? Who knows.

That's interesting. I'm GF, but my husband is not. I get a little itchy afterwards too, but it usually goes away after a couple of minutes.

We pretty much established that it has not affected our fertility though. We were using contraceptives religiously so I could get dental work done, only been having "relations" four months, and blammo! I'm 14 weeks pregnant. Embarassed

Contraceptives can also make you "a little itchy."

Aha! So maybe it isn't even him. While I am pretty sensitive to gluten I can have it on my skin for a few minutes with no symptoms, so I am not as sensitive as some people out there. However, if you look at how that specific fluid is produced, I really doubt gluten could make it's way into it. It's not like someone's bloodstream which nutrients are absorbed directly into from the intestines. Even then, I don't think most people have food particles leaking into their bloodstream unless they happen to suffer from leaky gut syndrome.
