my support to you momofcdteen. Good for you for sticking up to what you needed for your son. I do not know where these people are coming from with the views that we should all be passive & not request common sense solutions to a problem we have with providing our child with the basic everyday services that most people have access to whether it is because of CD or something else.

The problem is that in most school districts the policies are very restricted to the local views & traditions of the area. The federal & state regulations are something that they try to avoid. In their ignorance they make their own little rules, such as saying the 504 does not cover CD.

CD issues remind me of the issues that women have been fighting for years for equality in the work place, not to mention the right to work without fear of sexual harrassement. This has been very controversial as to how best to achieve these changes. To change/educate the general public views is a long tedious process no matter what the subject CD or anything else.

There has been a lot of progress made in the past year with the press that CD has gotten. More & more people are becoming aware of this disease. A lot of it is thanks to people like momofcdteen who let people know that her child has CD or people like me that tell everyone that I have CD. I am sure momofcdteen is talking to a lot of undiagnosed CD people with foggy brains at that school. The information might not mean anything to them now, but maybe at some point in the future it might click in their little brain that they are someone in their family has CD.

There are other reasons to have access to a microwave than gluten contamination. Basic food safety requires that food that needs a refrigerator be kept at or below 40 degrees and then heated before eating if it is to be served hot. You can't just leave "cold pizza" in a locker at room temp and then SAFELY eat it several hours later.

The longest amount of time to leave food out the fridge and eat it without risk of excessive bacterial growth is 2 hours. Most schools have longer than that before lunch. To provide a safe meal you could either send cold food with an ice block or send food to be heated and keep it on ice till lunch time when it is microwaved.

Kids who do not have special diet needs have the option of a hot meal bought from the school, kids who need GF meals should be allowed that option if they ask. A diabetic child who needed special meals heated would get that without question because people are more used to that illness.

My kids did not have special diets, but if they had any foods that needed to be cold, an ice block was in the lunchbag for safety. I am glad the teacher is helping out here. This is a very small thing to do for a student's health.

Hi Mom,

Can I ask how long DS (Dear Son) has been GF?

Oh gosh...pizza party...yup...that's gotta be hard.

I am fourteen years old and I have endured hundreds of pizza parties, birthday parties just plain parites, school lunches, etc. My elementary school didn't have a cafeteria, (Canadian) but my high school does. I just bring lunch every day. I wouldn't allow the cafeteria ladies to make my lunch- no way would they make it right. We do have a microwave for student use, but I've never used it. I bring salads, sandwhiches with GF bread, GF macaroni/pasta in a thermos, or soup in a thermos. Trust me, it's fine. I've gone on overnight trips with my school and camp and have been perfectly fine. Oh wait, AND I've never cheated EVER! I have had multiple pizza parties at my school and just didn't eat. Just make sure you're not very hungry when they have them, and you'll be fine.

Believe in yourself!

Hi Jackie,

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!! It was nice to hear it from the student's point of view.

It sounds like you have the GF diet figured out to "T". Very Happy

Great job...keep up the good work!

Hope to "see" you out here more often. Smile

Good for you, Jackie, you're a very saavy teen. Your approach is exactly the approach my husband takes - he just "says no" to most foods not prepared by me. We go to parties and for the most part he doesn't eat anything, unless its fresh fruit or veggies. He absolutely doesn't cheat - its just not worth the pain and suffering.
