If the plastic bowl has scratches, or has those microwaved "boiling around the edges" marks, gluten can hide in there. As far as I know, alcohol is the only substance that will break down gluten and render it harmless to celiac patients (please correct me if I'm wrong, gang).

Cutting boards have the same problem....scratches and cut marks that can shelter that sneaky gluten. To be safe, we tossed all of our plastic cutting boards, plastic cooking utensiles, and even got rid of the last teflon pan in the house (don't like that evil stuff, anyway...but that's for another thread). I even got rid of my *sniff* waffle iron, as I just couldn't be sure it was adequately cleaned.

Alcohol might denature proteins, but to my knowledge it won't degrade them. Since it's the protein sequence we react to alcohol won't get rid of it.

I've never ever heard that one before! Source or proof?

This may be coming from me. I think it's in a CC thread - I made reference that gluten is not water soluble, but rather alcohol soluble. This is not to say that a celiac can eat gluten then guzzle alcohol to fix the problem - it doesn't work that way...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliadin

Quote:
α-/β-gliadins - soluble in low percentage alcohols.

Quote:
Gliadins are known for their role, along with glutenin, in the formation of gluten. It is slightly soluble in ethanol and contains only intramolecule disulfide links.

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1536826

Quote:
The mixed reverse solid phase passive antiglobulin haemadsorption test (MRSPAH) and the enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) were found equally sensitive and fitted for the measurement of serum IgG antibodies against alcohol soluble gliadins.

http://www.answers.com/topic/gliadin

Quote:
A protein substance that is obtained from wheat and rye. Its solubility in diluted alcohol distinguishes gliadin from glutenin.

It's gliadin that is alcohol soluble. I have removed that sentance and updated the PDF.

Sorry for the confusion.

And when you FINALLY get totally fed up with your brother's attitude, Ostrich, you could slip a little ipecac into HIS food when he's not looking and while he's busy being sick, tell him to straighten up. It's all in his head and he's ruining the get together! Twisted Evil

A couple of squirts of Visine in his beverage will do the same thing. A bit of chocolate flavored Exlax squares slipped into a gluten free brownie will offer the same results. I think the Visine is the easiest to slip without being spotted though. Don't ask me how I know...I won't tell.

My family that most of them are sick are such a help. I talked to my mom today to tell her whats going on with all the new stuff I've been reading, and that I think I'm figuring this food stuff out. she said don't read to much, you might find out your dying, gee thanks mom. My sister that lives in town, that knows everything thats going on with me. we went out of town for a funeral and I could'nt find anything to eat at the funeral, she told me to stop being such a baby a little is'nt going to kill you, and my favorite, she told me "why don't you just have some pasta salad, that does'nt have flour in it" WHAT? I asked her "what exactly do you think they make pasta out of?" She tried going gf for a week to see if she felt better. It consisted of cutting actual Bread out of her diet. Hum, wounder why it didn't make any differance? I guess I was ignorant at one time about food. But can you say stupid? My entire family is seriously obese. I am 130 pounds. They think me and my daughter has eating issues. I do but its not what they think. SCREAM...... Thanks for listening carey

Well aloneinidaho?---not only are not alone, but you're also not alone in Idaho!! Very Happy My husband and I AND our children all have Celiac. You would think that ONE stinkin' member of my family or his family would believe us or support us or even----gasp!----follow the advice of all the experts and get tested since they are first degree relatives!! NOPE. Not a single.member from either side will test or even believe us. They think we tested the wrong way and are all faking it. Really. My mom truly believes we are following a fad diet and when it goes out of favor, we will eat gluten again Shocked My brother who is a real, live MD, was FURIOUS that we didn't fly to the East Coast to test at the hospital he thinks is the best. He also stated that our daughter's improvement on GF diet was 'mental' and not real. My uncle thought that we had 'symptoms' because I had done too much reading about it and was imagining it! My SIL has a daughter with overt symptoms of gluten intolerance----and WILL NOT spend the money for the testing because insurance won't pay for it. So this child has had 4 stomach xrays, takes numerous medications and sees the doctor all the time for her problems----which of course insurance pays for all THAT---they just won't pay for the proper testing including genetics!!

Our friends who live in Boise have a granddaughter who was diagnosed with Celiac a few years ago----and so they hunted down a GF store in Boise and every single time they visit they bring a bag FULL of GF goodies for us!!! Not a single family member has ever even considered even buying a BOX of GF cookies for the kids. In fact, we don't do family meals and get togethers anymore because we are just too much hassle for everyone...........the kids have been emotionally traumatized by this. We are actually moving to California, not only for work, but also so that I can find health care practitioners who can help us AND a Celiac Support Group so my kids can get some emotional support for what we have been going through for 5 years! We have gone this alone, with NO support at all since 2005.
