I had a chat with Gus's play group therapy leader yesterday about his new diet, and she assured me that she knew all about the gluten free diet, as her daughter has autism and was on it for 2 years (as she steered Gus toward the play-dough table Shocked ). I asked her why she's not on it anymore, and she replied that her daughter was doing so well they decided she didn't need it anymore, and they only reinstate it when she's not feeling well! Shocked Shocked

Then she looked shocked when I said Gus couldn't play with the play-dough, since it was made with wheat flour. "But he's not going to EAT it, is he??" she replied...and the glue sticks, too? Why can't he use the glue sticks?

Oy. I'm really glad this is a parent/child group, and I can keep an eye on things.

Wow.

I bumped a thread for you about GF play dough. Maybe you could provide some for your son to play with, provided he had his own space and play dough toys.

I learned from personal experience that play dough can and will make celiac kids sick. We won't be making that mistake again.

Hi Gus's Mama, don't be surprised! You just won't believe the things that people say. My son is attending a small progressive school for 1st grade this year and the head of the school, who knows all about children and their education and health (!), said to me, "well, you could put him back on gluten by trying one thing at a time to see which he reacts to". Duh, what's the difference between the gluten in whole wheat bread and gluten in pasta or pretzels?? So much for all the material that I sent to them so they'd have an understanding of celiac disease and the gluten free diet! Oh, and at his IEP meeting we mentioned the gf diet and the woman chairing the meeting said that she knew all about the gf diet becaue her brother had just been diagnosed and was upset about the beer. "Good thing you can still drink beer if it's the type that comes in the clear bottles like Corona. Just so long as you don't over do it!" Am I missing something here? Shocked

Oh good grief...

Guess I'll be buying up all the clear bottled beer I can find - NOT!

Where do people come up with this stuff? Confused

It's like cookie crumbs. The crumbs that fall off a NGF cookie are GF (and have no calories or fat).

what cracks me up is when people learn that Ina has CD and I explain about gluten and mention barley and their eyes get real wide and they say "Oh No! she will never be able to drink beer!"...no mention of bread etc...lol...and not to mention that she is mentally retarded......like it will ever be appropriate for her to drink beer....lol...

*bangs head on desk*

While I'm fortunate to be surrounded by fairly understanding people, I have run into more gluten-clueless people lately (the "a little bit won't hurt, right?" crowd)...must be something in the water. Rolling Eyes

I think you have to eat them standing up for that to be true. In fact, I think that's true for everything you eat while you're standing up! Very Happy

Yeah, I just LOVE that. I also used to work with someone who used to say "A little won't kill you, right?" My response was always "It won't kill me immediately, but it will get me someday with slow, painful death from cancer." Eventually, he stopped asking.

I hope that if my son has Celiac, people will be a little more aware by the time he hits school. (A girl can dream, right?!?)

Manda, don't count on them being clued in when the time comes! A good number of people say they know all about it and then their suggestions show...not so much!

Okay, I just read that Elmer's and Ross white glues and sticks are okay...can anyone corroborate that one? Confused

Yes, I have read that about the Elmers and Ross's glue products. I have a printout right in front of me which I printed out about 5 weeks ago, but I can't remember from where. Also, I just checked and they are listed as gluten free in the Clan Thompson Everything Else 2009 booklet.
