What kinds of things do you bring to snack on in the airport or bring on the plane? I'm nervous about bringing something that is not supposed to be on the plane, but I also don't want to be starving. Any recommendations would be great! _________________ ~Erin~

I got a letter from my dr. saying that I needed GF food for medical necessity. this way there was no question as to why I had food in my suitcases.
For on the flight, I took veggies and some dip, cookies, candy. If I had thought about it, I would have made me a couple of sandwiches. My DD, Antsy, just flew from Germany with her letter and she was allowed to bring a meat sandwich aboard to eat. For the baby, she brought some baby food and some rice cakes and cookies and slices of fruit.
For drinks, you will have to purchase your water after you clear security to go to your gate. If you try to take liquid through security, you will have to toss it. It can only be brought after then. They may make you wait to get liquid on board the plane now though.
If you have liquid RX with your name, you can take that aboard. Make sure if you have any medical needs, they have your name on the label. If it is just something liquid from over the counter, it is limited to an ounce or two or has to go in the packed checked luggage. _________________

I flew last year with trail mix and gf banana bread. Nobody questioned anything. If your flight is long enough to offer actual meals rather than endless rounds of snack packets and drinks, check into whether or not they serve gf meals. Many airlines do but you need to make the request at least 24 hours before the flight. _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

I did this too. I never needed it, but it was nice knowing I had it in case security gets annoying. I usually travel with things I know will keep me full, just in case I can't get food until I arrive. Cereal, sandwiches, Chex Mix, beef jerky, etc. If you can swing a small cooler you could bring fruit, cheese sticks, meat. Make sure you bring a little bit of sweet stuff to keep your blood sugar up (or have a soda on the plane). _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Thank you for all the ideas! Luckily the flight is only a few hours, but could seem very long if I'm starving lol _________________ ~Erin~

I fly all the time. Staples that I bring are: banana, apple, orange, lara bar/some other protein/granola-y bar, gf crackers (I like Mary's gone crackers). You could even bring a small tub of peanut butter to add to the fruit and/or crackers. If your flight is only a few hours, this should be sufficient food...well if you like fruit You can really bring anything solid though.
Be careful of the salads from the airport stands. I got one once (in my early days of being GF) and ate it without dressing. I got gassy right away and the plane ride wasn't very fun. I'm guessing it was the deli turkey in it. Everything else was just veggies.
Usually I get a coffee or tea and sip that before boarding, which fills me up a bit. I love flying....and now that I'm GF, the flights are so much more enjoyable and less painful!! |

Also, if you don't have issues with blood sugar levels or sulfites, Costco has bags of dried fruit that would travel very well. _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

if you want bottled water, our kids were told to bring an empty (clear) water bottle... to get through security. Once you are through security, you can fill it at the water fountain before boarding the plane. _________________ Kim --

I also take an empty water bottle with me. If you want something flavored, you can get the crystal light to go or other stick packs of drink mix. coupons.com has printable coupons for $1 off one and $2 off 2 crystal light. For a week starting July 5th Kmart will double those coupons. At a buck for 10 I now have a lot of Crystal light stick pack. Just be careful, the energy ones have almost twice as much caffeine as cola.
For food, I'd take rice crackers, trail mix, chocolate bars, bags of dried fruit, a bag filled with cereal, and granola type bars. _________________ Lauren

I might suggest you go straight to the source regarding what is allowed on an aircraft.
http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm
If you're going to take salad dressing or any other/liquid/gel type foods just make sure they are placed in your 1 quart bag in smaller than 3 ounce containers. I've been to Europe and have taken a couple of domestic flights and didn't need the MDs note that I went out-of-the-way to get. I wouldn't bother doing that again so long as I follow TSAs guidelines.
I've 'heard' that airlines will at times make a flight peanut/nut-free if there is a person on board who is allergic to those items. Thus, I would suggest you stay away from them. |

For my overseas flights, I pushed for the doctor's letter so none of my food got confiscated before I had a chance to get to it, or finish taking it home
But for the national flights, I'm not so worried.
Since I am flying with a toddler, and pregnant myself - I have to keep plenty of snacks on hand. So, our last flight I had:
Cookies
Pound cake slices
Schaer Crackers
Cereal
In the packed luggage I had a couple small flour mix, cocoa and other items that we'd use when baking/cooking. Nothing was bothered and I'm not even sure they actually opened my bags... there was no TSA notice like the last 3 times I flew.
Since I am now going to be over 20 weeks when I fly (22 I think?) and with a 13 month old, I will have about the same kind of carry on stuff to snack on, with probably some fruit/veggie and cheese that I expect to be eaten before we get there.
When we flew, the choice for GF food was not that great. We had the nasty multi-grain bread with a low-fat mayo and regular veggie type sandwich, some kind of funky pasta salad (cold), and I have never liked that kind of thing. The other veggies were palatable, but between me and the baby we did NOT like what we were served.
Hopefully this go around, we will have a better selection of food. _________________
