The little one in Lowell (Bridge St) has them too! I bought the chocolate chip cookies, but haven't made them yet. I'm saving them for something special.
Yes, DeMoulas/Market Basket is a New England chain. _________________ Deb

I'll have to have my mom look for them next week when she does her grocery shopping. YUM!

Colleen- how long did you bake them? I'm thinking making mini's and then freezing them would be a good plan. _________________ Rachel |

Is Betty Crocker offering a GF icing for the cakes? If not any suggestions on what to use? The last one I tried made me sick it had so much butter in it. _________________ STZ

| I finally saw the mixes! My local grocery store has the brownie, cookie, and yellow cake mixes for $3.39 each. I didn't get one because I had too many other things to get this trip (and I didn't really feel like baking) but I definitely will get one on my next trip to the store. |

Sorry for the late reply, I just saw this. I think I baked the minis for about 14 minutes. Seemed to work OK. _________________ -Colleen

I got the chocolate chip mix and made them last night. They were really good! It was such a treat to not have to measure out a bunch of different flours.
I used 1/4 cup butter and 1/4 cup canola oil. The dough was a little too crumbly (I could tell by cardine45's photos that it didn't look quite right) so I used my hands to give it a quick knead and then it was fine. I froze half of the cookies so I'll see how well those hold up. |

It's been a long time since I've posted any food porn, so I decided to change that.
Peg made these cupcakes for a recent family gathering. She decided to use the frosting from her Aunt's "Funeral Cake".

Al,
Is the fact you didn't comment on the taste of the products a comment in itself? |

Nope, it's merely a fact that 1) I didn't realize that food porn always required a review. Guess I need to read the rules a bit closer . 2) I was doing several different things at once yesterday and simply did not have the time then to write a review on it right then and there.

As you can see the cookies turned about quite well. Yes, they do taste as good as they look! Be aware, they do contain an entire stick of butter. The good thing is that these cookies freeze quite well, as to most GF baked goodies.
Peg made the cupcakes for a family gathering we had recently.
The frosting she made is from an old family recipe. It's from her Aunt Elsie's "Funeral Cake" recipe. It's called funeral cake because Elsie would always make it to take for funeral gatherings.
Even the "gluten-eaters" approved of them. They're a bit denser than wheat cupcakes, but tasty none the less!
One thing I've noticed in these two products is the lack of grittiness. Often times rice flour that is not ground fine enough feels gritty in the mouth as you chew it. You'll find that the asian rice flours will have this very fine [almost powdery] grind. It appears that General Mills is using such a fine grind in these products. |
Additional thoughts...
These cookies are a bit too crispy for me. If you like a crispy cookie, I'm sure you'll love 'em. Peg said she will replace some of the butter the next time.
Are these products as good as homemade - No. What packaged product are - NGF or GF? We need to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. Are these products as good as mixes that cost twice as much? Yes. Are they easy to find? Right now, Yes.
I hope this satisfies the requirements for posting food porn I best get to calling my Mom's doctor... _________________ Al

Thanks for taking the time to letting us know what you thought. The porn looked good enough to eat just wondered if you thought it was worth the calories.
How's you mom doing these days? Edited to add...just read the update in off topic. Thinking of you... |

| I have two major grocery store chains in my area (not counting Wal-Mart). The mixes are now in both. In one store, they are in the regular baking aisle and cost $3.39. In the other, they are in the gluten-free aisle and they are $4.49. Maybe they think they can charge more if it looks like a specialty item. |
