| I haven't called for a coupon, but I wouldn't worry about how many they give out. I'm sure that as part of their product launch campaign they budgeted for a certain number of coupons and when they run out, they run out. And even if they give out thousands of free mixes, it's still cheaper than one TV or magazine ad. Plus, they probably are more likely to get people hooked with their generosity and the care they show toward the GF community than by any one advertisement. |

This was my thought too.
We haven't called for ours, probably won't since we've tried them and know what they're like. |
I really want to be able to make these to share with friends, but they are still a bit on the expensive side, so I figured if I can get a few free mixes, I won't feel as bad if they don't like it. I refuse to waste my gf baked goods due to the cost.
I think it will also help if I can share so that other people can see that just because something is gf, it doesn't mean it tastes bad.
I hope my other post didn't make it sound like I was just trying to get freebies.
I also hope that people don't just take advantage of it. I want as many people as possible to know about them, so they will hopefully develop additional mixes and broaden their product line. Free mixes is a great way for General Mills/Betty Crocker to do this. |

I'm more concerned about the non-celiacs that'll call in to get one just because it's free. As long as the coupons go to celiacs that will try them then they are serving their purpose. It's when people start trying to get them that have no idea what gluten is that just want a freebie that this will get shut down.
I'm glad it's by phone only, discourages people that'd want to get it just because it's free. _________________ Lauren

This post as well as the other led me to believe you will/might take advantage of General Mills generosity. To each her own... |

My comment about having my friends and family call for me was made in jest. I am excited to get a free mix, and when I am excited I say silly things. Sorry if I upset anyone. _________________ -Colleen

I think the important thing is that the coupons get used and that people who like the product spread the word.
It never ceases to amaze me how many hundreds of thousands of dollars of freebies companies will give away to market a book or product without even caring if the recipient will do anything with it.
At least with the GF mixes, they can be pretty sure that the people calling will actually use the mixes and spread the word about them. |

There was a really interesting article on gfpost.com about the whole giveaway. (I'd link but their site is down right now) Like jeant said, it's actually a lot cheaper to give away samples like they're doing then to run a full new product launch campaign. It's also generated one of the most positive customer responses the company has seen to date.
So TEC I wouldn't worry about taking advantage of the company. They're getting off cheap to begin with and they most certainly aren't going to lose money as they'll "shut off the valve" when they reach their limit. Again, nothing is for free either. You might get a box of mix, but it sounds like they're getting a lot of information in exchange for it. _________________ Cheers!

I will agree that this is probably a HUGE marketing boost for them and well worth the money they spend to do it. It will return large dividends... _________________ Al

Non Celiac chocolate freaks on my other board like the gluten free brownies better than the gluten version because they have a better chocolate flavor to them (wheat really ruins the flavor of chocolate for some people, like the ability to taste the bean-y bitterness in some Bob's Red Mill mixes, this may be a genetic taste abnormality)
The gluten free pantry brownies are popular with some non celiacs chocolate fans for the same reason. More pure chocolate flavor. I hope the general populace tries the new mixes, likes at least some of them better than their wheat containing counterpart and sticks with them. _________________ Pat |

Hi Pat,
Welcome to the board!
I would agree with your comment.
From what I have been able to figure out - wheat has a taste and it's a bit bitter. When Peg makes a GF item that is dead on to it's NGF version [she tells me this since I obviously don't eat the wheat version] - it tastes bitter - less sweet to me.
She also notices that you can cut back the sugar in GF baked goods because it tastes too sweet - comparatively. _________________ Al

When I was talking to them, and told them how excited I was that a mainstream company was making products gluten free and how I didn't have to feel left out from the rest of my family when it comes to sweets I think she appreciated my comments. I I told her where I heard about the coupons and she didn't seem bothered. I told her how difficult it is for us if we aren't scratch bakers. I think they are hoping we get the word out.
I do think it is very generous to let us try it free the first time to see if we like it. I just can't wait till it gets here in Wauconda area so I can start buying it. _________________ GF BD 1/4/2008

One of my co-workers was very excited to tell me about the coupons yesterday. Apparently she found a link to get one on the internet, but it wasn't working when she tried. The poor thing looked crushed when I told her I already knew and had ordered one. Her next door neighbor has celiac, but doesn't follow the diet when she doesn't want to, so she thought the coupon would be more appreciated by me.
It sounds like this girl doesn't bake either (I think she's 16 or 17), so even if my co-worker can't get the coupon, I think I'm going to use mine to make her something. From what I've heard, she doesn't think gf stuff tastes good, and it's too much work. I doubt if anything I do or say will change her mind, but it's worth a shot. I only wish they lived closer so I could spend some time with her and maybe show her the diet isn't that bad. |

I just called and the machine said they ran out of coupons. Oh well, at least it shows people are listening and will use the product! _________________ ~Erin~
