I think maybe GF oats and I are no longer BFF's. The last few times I have tried them I have really suffered the consequences. Not feeling too hot today. Feeling worse than I have in years, in fact.
Can you lose your tolerance for them over time? I know a small percentage cannot tolerate them at all (like my son), but I seemed to do fine with them in the beginning.
Ugh. _________________ -Colleen

Sorry to hear that C. I've never been able to eat them without feeling absolutely glutened. _________________ Nance

I despise oats. Nasty gluey things. I remember spitting them out before I had teeth so I guess I'm intolerant. Or at least repulsed. _________________ Pat |

Awww, I'm sorry Colleen! Could it be because you're combining it with another food (like one high in fiber)? _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I prefer my oats in baked good form. I don't eat them otherwise. _________________ Al

How often do you eat them? Daily may be too much but once a month may be ok? _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

I'm actually glad you posted this, Colleen (but NOT glad it happened to you!!)! I've had a similar experience with oats...I was fine when I first started to reintroduce them slowly, but then it just got intolerable. It stinks because I really do like oats, but I think that I too, have to give them up again...
Oh well, can't say we didn't try!! _________________ ~Torrey

I've been too chicken to try any oats...but I have wondered if I would do ok with them. I used to be addicted to oats pre-gf. I ate oatmeal all the time and would actually eat dry oats out the bag- bizzare, I know.
Sorry you aren't tolerating them well anymore. That stinks. _________________ Rachel |

I've tried Gifts of Nature and Bob's Red Mill. This last batch was BRM.

I actually eat them very infrequently. Once every few months or so, mostly due to the cost. Maybe this is part of the problem? Do I have to go through the introduction process every time if I go a long time between exposures? Nobody talks about that part.

I ate them with only brown sugar. Yesterday was not a really high fiber day.
I don't know what to do now. Try them again after I recover (not sounding too great at the moment. I am as sick today as I was yesterday, maybe a little worse)? Try a different brand? Try a smaller amount? I don't know how much I really love oats, but I don't like being unable to eat things that I should be able to eat.
Holy crap, I used to feel like this all the time! How did I function!?! Groan...... _________________ -Colleen

Try them in a different format such as a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie. _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

Oh sorry! That totally stinks. I can't abide the oats, too bad as I love them, but I feel horrible when I eat them.
I wish I had the magic answer for you but I don't. My school of thought is, if it makes you feel like crap, don't eat it! On the other hand, instead of subjecting yourself to another round of oats where you know you'll feel bad maybe see if it's just your body reacting to the increased fiber. After you feel better look up an equally high fiber food and consume the equivalent amount that you'd eat in oats and see how you feel. If you feel cruddy it could just be the increased fiber. If you feel fine it's probably a reaction to the oats themselves.
Anyway, I do hope you feel better soon. _________________ Cheers!

OK, so now I don't know what the heck is going on. I got brave and tried some oat flour in a recipe (ground in my Magic Bullet from Gifts of Nature GF oats). Everything is fine, and I don't feel any negative effects. So is it the Bob's Red Mill oats that give me trouble? Is it the format (oatmeal vs. flour?) Is it the amount (I used a 5- part mix of different flours in the muffins, so there was only 1 cup of oat flour in 5 cups of flour)?
Ack! This is so confusing! _________________ -Colleen

Do you still have any of the BRM oats? If so, it may be worth it to test them using Elisa EZ Gluten Free test. If nothing else it will put your mind at ease.
Regarding the flour blend, you used 1 cup to make 5 cups of mix. How much of the five cups of the mix did you use in the recipe? How many muffins did you use? How many have you eaten? You may have eaten just a few teaspoons worth of oats which may not be enough to cause you oat troubles. |
