|

Hey all, I have a totally random question...
Is anyone at all familiar with an olive allergy? I mean, seriously, is it a possibility?
I'm asking because I ate a sandwich at Risotteria two weeks ago and could not figure out for the life of me why I was feeling yucky afterward (I mean, SEVERE abdominal pain). I ate there again yesterday and had something completely different (a GF pizza)...and I got even worse pain last night...
The weird thing is that the pizza I ordered is *normally* made with pesto, but they had run out of pesto and asked if they could use the olive tapenade instead...
I'm really thinking it was the tapenade because I had the same pizza last week sans problem.
Shoot, now I need to find an allergist. Dammit. _________________ ~Torrey

Some allergens are more common than others, but I'm pretty sure anything can cause an allergic reaction. Were there any other common ingredients in the two meals? You've mentioned eaten there often, but any chance of CC? _________________ Steph |

No, this place is known for its GF stuff...
I spoke to one of the waiters earlier...apparently, the tapenade contains anchovies...hmm...
But I always thought that seafood/shellfish allergies were of the anaphylactic sort, not the EXTREME abdominal pain that I experienced...
Crap, now I really have to find an allergist. _________________ ~Torrey

I would get a complete list of the ingredients before you go, so that they could narrow down the field. As far as olives go though, have you ever eaten olives or used olive oil, without a problem? _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

Was this higher fat food than you normally eat and do you have a gallbladder?
Did the pain radiate through to your back?
And of course, food poisoning. Olives are good about growing anerobic bacteria (bacteria that does not like oxygen)Thus several recalls in the past few years. _________________ Pat

The last time I ate shrimp I experienced extreme abdominal pain too. I'm not sure if it's an allergy or not. But it hurt like hell. So I'm not eating shrimp again.
I'm going to second what Kathie said: get a complete list of ingredients. Sort through it and see if there's anything you don't normally eat. Whatever the problem is, I hope you get to the bottom of it soon! _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

You might want to look into sulfite allergy/sensitivity.
The Kalamata Olives would likely have been in a brine solution, and then you have the olive oil, lemon juice and anchovies also...
Anything's possible. _________________

One of the problems they are having with imported farm raised shrimp is that they are heavily contaminated with antibiotics (esp. drugs like Macrodantin) and antifungals.
Big scary pamphlet-"suspicious shrimp!"

I think they symptoms can vary. I have a friend that broke out in hives after eating shrimp a few different times, so she stopped eating it in case the allergy got worse.
Check to see if your Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies. Though that might not rule out a problem with the tapenade (since the sauce is usually used sparingly), it might help the allergist to know if you can eat that.
Maybe it's possible that only the tapenade was contaminated somehow, like if they got olives from some distributor that were contaminated or changed their brine formula or something. |

If you had stomach problems, I doubt that an allergist could help you. It sounds more like an "intolerance" to me. Many processed foods give me big problems including olives. _________________ Judy |

Yeah, I don't have any real allergies, to be honest...my mom, brother, and sister are allergic to everything under the sun, but I just have the auto-immune problem with gluten...
I spoke to the place because I'm very friendly with them--the tapenade is very simple--olives + anchovy paste...
SOOO, as someone (a couple of you?) mentioned, it could also be the anchovies....
I don't cook, so unfortunately, I don't have Worcestershire sauce in my house, so I don't know if I tolerate it well or not, but that is a VERY good idea!
I don't know how to determine what it was--I thought an allergist would be my best bet... _________________ ~Torrey

I get an allergic type reaction to olive oil. Hives. But that has greatly eased up being GF.
doesn't Worcestershire sauce contain gluten? _________________ son - high ttg - 4/09, pos. biopsy 5/09

Hmm...the past few weeks, I have been exceptionally sensitive to everything (and I am VERY strictly GF)...I'm not sure what all is going on...not only the olive/anchovy thing, but I had an allergic skin reaction to my perfume, too.

Some do, some don't. Generally, it is an issue of what type of soy sauce is used when it is made. In the US, Lea and Perrin's is GF. I have also found several store brands that are safe. As always, read the label. _________________ -Colleen
