It started a few months ago, but we thought we had it under control...
To make a long story short, I saw my family doctor about the issues that I have been having and after a while of trying different medications and test, I started to see a Gastroenterologist. He thinks I have IBS and currently has me on Reglan.
Like I said..short story.
Now currently, this is what is happening.
I have been doing very well recently...until yesterday. I had Olive Garden for lunch. I had Fettuccine Alfredo w/ sausage, some bread sticks and that sausage soup. My stomach was a little upset afterward, but nothing a trip to the bathroom didn't help clear up.
Well, got home, still had that gotta go to the bathroom feeling. But it wasn't too bad. So, I had the rest of the Fettuccine for dinner, but before I was able to finish, I had to run to the bathroom again. I didn't want to the rest of the food to go to waste, so I finished up the Fettuccine and 2 bread sticks thinking nothing of it. Well, my mom happened to stop by and dropped off a chocolate, rich brownie. Yep, had that too.
When I was half way through the brownie, I started to feel full and bloated. Within an hour later, I had a full attack of whatever is going on inside me. And it is now 9 hours later and I still have the symptoms. Not as strong as last night, but still strong non the less. If last night was 100%, I am about 75% right now.
My symptoms are these:
Stomach Pain
Cramps
Gotta go to the bathroom again feeling
Indigestion (worse when I am lying on my side)
Feel like I could throw up, especially when I get up and move around
Can't currently stand up straight
Nausea
Stomach/abdomen tightness
Bloated feeling
Shortness of breath, worse when I get up and move around
Bealchy
Stomach is doing backflips/summersaults feeling
I just had to call into work, there is no way I can go to work feeling like this. My brother and sister-in-law are both paramedics and she is a nurse. They think I might have gluten intolerance. And when I search online I do see some of my symptoms are similar to gluten and Celiac issues.
I found this forum while stumbling Google for symptoms and trying to find something that might help me right now. Oh, I haven't tried yet today or last night, but the last time I felt this way, I tried every antacid under the sun and non of them helped. I have tried Pepto-Bismol, Maalox, Mylanta, Gas-X, etc. Nothing helped then, and I'm not sure they will help now. And I'm also not sure if I can even take them because of the Reglan that I'm taking.
Well, I have to run to the bathroom again! Ug...any advice out there? Does it sound like I might have a Gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease?
I have made a doctor's appointment for this morning and hopefully he can figure something out. I did have an upper endoscopy done a couple months ago and it came up negative. And I know I have had regular blood tests from my family doctor, but I'm not sure if Celiac is a normal thing they test for.
The weird thing is that I've NEVER had these issues before earlier in the year. I am 35 years old and this is all new for me. Does this sort of thing just pop up like this? Also, no one in my family has any issues like this. |

Hi! Welcome-small question...When you had the upper endoscope did they do biopsies for celiac disease, or just look at your stomach. I had a lot of upper endoscopes before someone did the correct biopsies
You could have many, many different things, obviously your doctor is going to need to run some more tests.Family doctors do not routinely check for celiac, in most cases (alas, they should) Do you have your gall bladder?
Have you ever had any pancreas or liver issues? _________________ Pat

Welcome!
Sorry you are feeling so badly & not getting any relief.
You had a serious carb/rich food overload & though I don't have CD or any intolerance to gluten, eating all of that would have made me sick due to the richness & the quantity. Just reading it made me bloat.
But we are all different & tests for celiac need to be demanded by the patient in some cases in order to have them done. My mom, who has CD, had countless endoscopies, had her gall bladder removed & went through hell with doctors before she was diagnosed & she HAD to demand they test her for Celiac. They continually told her IBS or that there was nothing wrong with her. Try keeping a food diary also so you can monitor your food intake & see what's triggering the "attacks". Bring that with you to your doctor & ask to be tested for celiac. You cannot eat gluten free before being tested though.
You will find lots of information & supporton this forum & I hope you are able to get tested for celiac soon. Good luck! |

I do believe they did a biopsy, I'm pretty sure they did, but not 100%. Yes, I have my gall bladder. And never had pancreas or liver issues.

I've never had problems eating stuff like that before!!!!
I am going to have a colonoscopy with a biopsy. Hopefully we will find out more from that. |

Just so you are informed before you go into the procedure, a colonoscopy is not a diagnostic tool for Celiac. If they want to take biopsies, they need to do an endoscopy, which it a tube down the throat. It is not uncommon to have both exams done at once (you are already prepped and out), so you might want to ask your doctor about that.
I hope you find some answers. _________________ -Colleen

Unfortunately, our bodies can change as we get older. I might have been able to put away 100+ grams of fat like that in a day at one point, but there's no way I could do it now.
Still, it sounds like you should get tested for Celiac. Your previous endoscopy might not have done the right biopsy for Celiac, and as far as I know it is not standard in blood tests. It wouldn't hurt to have your gallbladder looked at either, as problems with high-fat meals can be one of the first signs of trouble.
I hope you feel better soon! |

If you start having very dark urine (the color of tea or cola) or very light colored stools (clay color to white) seek medical help immediately. Just sayin' _________________ Pat |

As for your question if this can just pop up, yes it can. I am 40 and I remember the day I started to feel sick and I just kept getting worse and worse until I was in the hospital. After about 2 months they figured out that i had Celiac. The doctor told me that I had probably always had it in a very light form and that stress, emotions, viruses, ect can trigger it to turn on. The bad thing is once it is turned on it will never go away except for your ability to manage it thru a GF diet. Good luck to you. _________________ STZ

Hi Need,
Welcome to the board.
Yes, it can just come out of seemingly nowhere. Experts feel that you need:
1) The genetic make up
2) Gluten (which is everywhere in ones diet)
3) A trigger: infection, sickness, surgery, pregnancy, extreme stress. Some thing that sets you body off on a wild goose chase.
I agree with Pat, if you urine is very dark - get to a doc - the kidneys may not be functioning properly. _________________ Al

Thanks for the replied everyone! You are all very helpful!
One thing I just thought of though. I have been eating oatmeal and toast just to eat something light and to try and help settle my stomach. Shouldn't this stuff be making it worse? It is getting better, although not 100% right now. But shouldn't the fact that I'm eating these foods make it worse or stop it from getting better? Maybe something else it going on??? |

That does fit the exact description of my gluten reaction. Unfortunately, it also fits the description of the flu and a million other things. I have to go with everyone else and say talk to the doc _________________ Marissa Carter

Someone else can probably give you a medical explanation for this, but I used to do the same thing. Toast and oatmeal were my friends when I was at my worst before diagnosis. It didn't fix it, but it always made me feel a bit better.
The way I understand it, while ingesting gluten, you're not really digesting anything anyway, so ingesting gluten may not have as much of an effect on you.
I've sometimes figured it was all in my head that it made me feel better too. Things like toast and oatmeal are supposed to make you feel better, and if you believe it enough, sometimes you can make yourself feel better, even for a little while. Unfortunately, you can't actually "think away" CD. Eating a piece of ngf toast now wouldn't make me feel better no matter how badly I wanted it to. |

When I was first switching over to GF I tried to figure this out too. For example, some toast or a waffle at breakfast wouldn't do anything. But a plain sandwich at lunch would make me sick.

It's common for CD symptoms to appear at times of high stress or body changes (like menopause or puberty). Just FYI. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

My symptoms were variable too. I found Ned's post interesting. For several years before we made the gluten-connection, wheat and cheese together would make me extremely ill. If I ate pasta with a cheese type sauce, or pizza, I would be running for the restroom within 30 minutes. I know it wasn't the fat content per se, because I always would bring home most of my meal, and when I eat pizza, I usually only eat 1 slice of a large one, and at most 2 or 3 of a small one.
I always blamed it on food poisoning. However, most types of food poisoning take longer than 20 minutes to "percolate." Also, the rest of my family would eat the same exact thing and not get sick. Duh...you'd think that would have told me something. _________________ Steph |
