Just diagnosed and weight 232lbs. I did weight 265 for a long time until i did a 2 week gluten free diet test and actually lost that weight to where i am.

I brought gluten back and never lost another lb.

I have been diagnosed with celiac as of today so i have to stop it all perminantly but want to know... will I loose weight? Ever?

My problem is I was skinny after my kid was born, got the norplant in my arm and got sick from it with about 92lb weight gain in 22 days.

Anyway, took a year to get it out of the arm (couldn't afford it) and by then the weight was mine to keep.

For years i literally ate one meal a day because i wanted to loose weight so bad yet it never EVER left. Just got higher and higher. I started to eat 3 square meals (health) a day and went from 200lbs up to 265 in a few years time.

I never got smaller and wonder, will I finally loose it? Help.

No one can tell you, and it will depend largely on how you go gluten free. The breads are VERY high calorie, and even I have to avoid them to keep from gaining weight (24, relatively active, can eat pretty much anything I want except for breads and pastas). I use brown rice for carbs.

You'll have to find what works for you. For me it's the lack of processed grains. Good luck.

Hi there

Yes I agree with Cultureslayer, careful on the bread, but otherwise who knows. Have seen loads of posts that go both ways - some people have lost, others have gained.

I'm trying to lose a bit myself and exercise is MY BEST BUDDY! It is almost impossible to lose weight without doing some kind of activity. What sort of stuff are you doing at the moment?

And one a meal a day???? Not a good idea. A try to eat three meals a day and don't snack, especially in the evening when I always seem to get an attack of the munchies. Otherwise all I'd say is loads of fruit and veg.

To be honest, I don't see why you won't lose weight but trust me, I know, it's just so damn hard! You can do it!

Let me know how you get on. Good luck!

(Maybe it is just your body recovering, absorbing all the nutrients that it wasn't able to before.... once your gut heals on the GF diet, maybe you will actually start to lose weight again because your body will realise that it doesn't need it anymore... just an after thought)

Cheers

Gsygal

Hi there!
You will absolutely begin to feel better going gluten free. Now that you have the implant gone, hopefully your hormones have stabilized, but I would follow up with your OBGYN for some testing to see.

Otherwise-sure you can lose weight. It's up to you and your choices, as was mentioned. It will not magically fall off by going gluten free, unfortunately though. Incorporate lots of vegetables and whole foods into your diet, steer clear of processed food as much as possible, and start to move more. Go for walks at least 1x/day, stand instead of sit. Small steps to start. Good luck and please keep us posted!

I feel much better going Gf and have lost 55 lbs but that has also been witha lot of exercise and proper eating which I had not done the past 40 yrs. But I think everyone is different. I would be more concerned about being healthy and if you do that and weight happens to come off then thats a bonus... Good Luck

I lost weight (I think mosty water retention and such) at first, and then regained some weight and stabilised.

When I got pregnant (both times!!) I lost a LOT of weight, but the baby gained, and after Jonathan was born, I gained some of that weight back.

I had started to lose weight when I found I was pregnant the second time. Boy was I not pleased when I saw the scales tipping up again... but then I found out why.. I was 6 weeks pregnant! Laughing

It probably depends on so many factors though - what you eat, how you eat, when you eat (in relation to sleep/wake times), how well you sleep and genetic predisposition.

Myself, if you are excerizing and watching your calorie intake then i would suggest getting your thyroid and insulin checked. Hypothyroidism and diabetes can often go along with celiac and both disorders can also cause weight gain. If those are not issues then I agree with the others about gluten free substitutes being higher in calories. I've lost almost 5 pounds now by walking a fast 1.5 to 2 miles per day and eliminating most gluten free goodies. I also try to eat as slow as possible since it takes 20 minutes for the stomach to realize that it is full and drink as much water as possible. More importantly, don't beat youself up right now. You are a newly diagnosed Celiac and that in itself is a big change in your eating habits and lifestyle. Don't worry about what the scales say for now and focus on eating healthy and feeling good and the weight may just naturally start coming off!
