A friend is gone for the weekend and asked me to watch her cat...I stayed at her house. Last evening I left and the cat got into the garage but wouldn't come back in the house. So, I opened the garage and the cat went outside. I almost had him and he tried to bite me so I decided to let him stay outside because I would only be gone for a few hours.
I got back to her house and there was no cat! I woke up 3 or 4 times in the night to call the cat...no cat. This morning...no cat! I drove the neighborhood looking for cat...no cat. What in the world do I do? How do I get this cat back home?
This cat is very much loved by my friend who is in her late 70s. I'm not sure if I should tell her that the cat is missing now or let her find out when she gets home. I won't be here then.
Also, he likes to be outside but my friend only occasionally lets him out and not for long periods of time because he doesn't have his front claws.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

The cat is no doubt ticked because you are there and your friend isn't. Cats resent that sort of thing. Putting food out may draw that cat back in. _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

Oh no... I hope Kitty comes home safe and sound. Sorry, I don't have any Cat Homing advice. _________________ Al

| Happy Ending! I just went out through the garage to start talking to the neighbors and there he was noshing on the food I placed a while ago. I was never so happy to see a four-legged creature in my life! All's well that ends well! |

Was Kitty happy to see her owner again? Was TEC happy to see Kitty's owner again? _________________ Al

I'd be more worried about the cat getting into chemicals in the garage (antifreeze). Did the cat sneak out while you had the door open? If so, a couple of tricks if you have to cat/house-sit again:
1. Only open the door wide enough for you to get through. Put your whole body in front of the open door.
2. If you know the cat can slink by your legs, put him on a leash first.
3. If the cat's going to bite you for putting him on a leash, lock him up in a room temporarily while you go outside.
My male cat is pretty good about sitting there. But if something catches his attention (especially a bug) bam! He's gone. And he doesn't have front claws either. Glad he made it back in one piece!
I also have a question for cat and dog people, if you don't mind me hijacking your thread.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

| I have another tip if it ever happens again. This works for dogs and cats. If you find them, and you are going to chase after them, circle around behind them first so that you are chasing towards the door, not away from it. It's hard to actually catch a dog/cat, so if you can chase them into the house, you don't need to catch them. |

I haven't talked to my friend since she got home but I expect they're both happy to see each other. I, however, was thrilled to get home and wash/rewash all of my laundry and get rid of the white cat hair that has turned up everywhere including my car Ick!
She lets him into the garage and outside, but he is normally ready to come back inside within a few hours. Clearly, the full moon impacted his decision to stay outside all freaking night.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm happily back home with my tortoise....don't ask. |

Use hot water if you can. It'll help get rid of the dander too.
I've always wanted a pet tortoise.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Oooh, hot water, eh? Can't do that with the darks but will with the whites. Thanks, Os.
Really, you want a pet tortoise? Don't tease me! |

If you can't do hot water at least do warm. You're probably going to react more to the dander than the hair. And the best way I know of to get rid of pet dander is to use hot/warm water and dry the material on warm (or let it air dry for a long time). If the hair's really thick throw the material in the dryer a couple of times, making sure to clean out the lint trap each time.
I also use one of those Pledge hair-picker-upper-things. It works much better than sticky lint rollers, and it's better for the environment. Just make sure you use small strokes. Like you're trying to scrub the carpet, not wax your car.
I always thought tortoises make cool pets! One of my dad's coworkers has a tortoise. He's a big hit at parties. Everybody loves feeding him flowers from the cherry tree in their back yard. <3
(Not turtles. I like turtles too, but the tanks stink to high heaven. And I'm used to fish tank stink.) _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
