I just got back my tests for celiac and need help with understanding.
I have had some upper right discomfort, and c/d in bowel movements over the summer.
results...
Iga 9.3
Igg 3.2
Tiss Trans. 6.5
Doctor said the results showed gluten allergy and I should go 6-8 weeks gluten free. also, that i did not have Celiac or damage to intestines, so no biopsy needed. Can someone help me to understand. Could I be having symptoms without full blown celiac? Thanks

Hi Jon,
Welcome to the board!!
Since each lab has their own reference ranges...it's really hard to tell. Usually your lab results will say in another column the ref ranges. Do you have a copy of your labs? I recommend everyone getting copies of them. Many times, things are missed and you are never told about. It's easy to do, it just requires a signature from your friendly & helpful med. records clerk (heehhee can you tell what my wife does )
Like.... 9.3 Normal: 2.1 - 15 (of course I'm making up the numbers)
The IgA and the IgG test are often used in detecting gluten sensitivity (ie gluten will cause problems, but you don't have CD).
The Tiss Trans test (tTG) is highly specific for villi damage (the gold standard of diagnosis).
To answer you question about having symptoms w/o CD...YES!!! I am a prime example. All to often Docs will say - "No you don't have CD". The patient continues to eat gluten and wonders why they are feeling ill all the time. GS aka Gluten Intolerance is not widely accepted yet. CD is only the tip of the iceberg in the Gluten Sensitivity spectrum. The Docs need to widen their view. From the sounds of it...you doc has done that. I do hope you carry out the GF diet as a trial. I suspect you will find improvement.
The only thing that help me was going GF. You can read mine (and other's) stories in Our Path's to Gluten Free-dom Thread
Here's some info for you:
GIG's PDF: Gluten Intolerance vs CD
Celiac vs Gluten Sensitivity
Gluten Sensitivity - Before the Villi are gone
I hope you hang out here for awhile and read, I think you'll find yourself over and over within the posts of this fine group of people. _________________ Al

| I think the range was under 25 being negative for CD. My doctor said that I would need over that for celiac, but he said under 3 would be statistically insignificant. he said I was in the middle range that showed senstivity, but not full blown CD. I have had some upper right low grade sens of sullness, bhind right ribs for the past 6 months. Doctors have asid IBS, put me on fiber for bowel irregularity. tests for GB have been negative, cat scan of ab unremarkable, liver blood tests fine. I was wondering about this sensation. Could this be bloating of sonme kind? I have never had this problem. My doctor said even without CD, gluten allergy could cause some malapsorption leading to some bloating ratiating to the back. What do you think |

I too just got my EGD and small intestine biopsy results back and the GI dr. said that I do not have celiac disease. Al, your information about gluten sensitivity really helped. That is obviously what I have because a gluten free diet relieves my symptoms. Thanks for putting it out there for those of us who have negative results all the way around. Things may more sense to me now and I can understand how blessed I am to be gluten sensitive instead of being celiac. I am very grateful. Thank You, Lord. Will still be praying for all of us who have to lead a gluten free lifestyle. It is still quite a challenge. Blessings of grace and peace to all! _________________ Carolyn

Hi Jon,
Hmmmm that was 2 years ago...I don't remember the numbers. I'd have to look it up. I think it was only 1 test IgA I think...it was negative BUT I had been GF for awhile so I didn't put much stock in the results. A Doc had run it w/o telling me. I was telling him my issues when dealing with another issue.
I am in the gluten sensitive aka gluten intolerant area. None of the tests show that I have celiac. But if you read my story in Our Paths to Gluten Free-dom...the only thing that made me feel better as going GF. No more bloating, reflux, gas, abdom pains, weird neuro things, brain fog, feeling hung over, weight loss.
Currently I am of all perscription meds. I have been off high blood pressure meds since Jan 05. I was on those for 20+ years.
Thanks Carolyn! That's partly why I'm out here. There are so many that get told they dont have CD and stop. They continue eating gluten and continue feeling bad. I want other to know that gluten can cause problems even if you don't have CD. Can it turn into CD if you continue eating gluten...the research is still being done on that. _________________ Al
