Refried beans can have flour in them!

I had no idea that anyone would put flour in their refried beans. I contacted a restaurant for a list of what has wheat. Turns out they put wheat in their beans. 2 friends were with me last night at that restaurant (it was a Christmas party). Both make beans from scratch (I get cans---no flour in those cans!). One had never heard of this & the other said she does it that way. Makes a rue of fat & flour, then adds the beans. So, what I thought was one safe food isn't! UGH!

Now I know to ask about refried beans, too! And Borracho beans are out at Mexican restaurants b/c they have beer in them.

Chips & salsa are generally still safe, though I know corn chips can have flour in them. sigh.

I needed a can of chili beans for taco soup this morning (potluck day at work), and I was surprised how many of the brands listed wheat flour in the ingredients.

As for the chips and salsa--watch out for some salsas. I tend not to even bother with it when we are out at a place like Chili's or Jose Tejas.
I know that Chili's salsa is not GF, so I don't even take my chances with others.
Oh, and I understand your frustration completely.
I went to make a quick dip for an Xmas party the other day and the Taco Bell taco seasoning packet listed wheat starch as the first ingredient!!!

The list I have from Chili's Guest Relations says that the salsa IS gluten-free. Have you been "glutened" by their salsa? I'm going on vacation next week and there is a Chili's in the town we are going to. I am hoping I can trust their list!!!

Watch out for chips too! On The Border soaks EVERYTHING in soy sauce! Including their chip mix. Gives them more flavor. I now buy Whole Foods Organic white corn tortilla chips as they are made in a gf facility. Seeds of Change salsa is great too. Other than Don Pablos, I stay away from Mexican food. The chance of cross contamination is very high. I make my own. Wink

Back to the GF refried beans...
My boyfriend and I were making Seven Layer Dip (improvised to be GF, of course) for our New Year's celebration.
We found Amy's Refried Beans at Shop Rite and bought two cans. It says right on the can GLUTEN-FREE, so I was very happy about that!! Wink

We just mixed the refried beans with a little bit of McCormick Chili Powder (no Taco Bell taco seasoning!! It has wheat flour listed as the FIRST ingredient!!) and it was fabulous. Smile

Our dip turned out to be really yummy and we served it with GF tortilla chips!

Ok, so I was starving the other day, and it was raining and cold and just plain yucky here in northern NJ...
So...we stopped at On the Border. Embarassed

BIG MISTAKE!
I didn't get a full-blown, crawl-into-the-fetal-position reaction, but my abdomen swelled up something scary and my tummy was rumbling all night! Shocked

I tried to be so careful, too...
Ah, I now know there is no such thing as being *too* careful when you go out to eat! Rolling Eyes

Needless to say, we won't be going there ever again...and to boot, John (my BF), wasn't very satisified with his meal or the service...
We went to a really nice (reminded us of San Francisco) and small restaurant last night, where the staff was really gluten-free friendly.
So, I got a really awesome grilled chicken breast that was grilled with lemon juice and fresh rosemary. It was served with a small handful of dried cranberries on top, roasted sweet potato spears (YUM!!), and steamed broccoli.
What a HUGE (and DELICIOUS!) difference from OTB!!!
